Ottawa protesters mock Crimean referendum with mock ballot

Protestors gathered outside the Russian Embassy in Ottawa Sunday to condemn a referendum being held in Russian-occupied Crimea.

Men dressed up like soldiers and stood beside a ballot box out front of the Russian Embassy in Ottawa in a mock version of the controversial referendum that happened in Ukraine’s Crimea region Sunday.

The demonstration, organized by Maidan Ottawa (a local off-shoot of the loosely organized EuroMaidan Ukrainian protest movement), took place Sunday afternoon, with dozens of protesters waving signs, holding flags while overseas an official results of the vote indicated a majority of residents supported splitting the strategic peninsula from Ukraine to join Russia.

“There isn’t anything legally or physically you can do so these protests are to raise awareness about the situation in Ukraine,” said Miroslava Bilaniuk, who is of Ukrainian descent.
