Could the downing of a Turkish jet by Syrian anti-air defenses lead to Article Five invocation? [video included]

A Turkish F4, the same type of fighter jet shot down by Syrian anti-aircraft systems

The West has tried to push several incidents to justify a foreign intervention in Syria, with the most recent being the alleged Houla massacre which quickly fell apart thanks in part to the BBC using an image from Iraq in an attempt to make readers emotionally react to the incident.

Thankfully, even mainstream media outlets around the world have begun to take notice (see below video) of the lies and misrepresentations that have been the hallmark of the tragic situation in Syria for well over a year now.

Also noteworthy have been the attempts to drudge up Iraq-style chemical weapons claims – which are devoid of any factual basis and nothing but pure, unadulterated propaganda – in order to build popular support for an attack on Syria.

It seems that none of these attempts have worked, but the latest incident might provide the justification that the West has been searching for.

Previously I wrote about how Turkey could invoke Article Five of the North Atlantic Treaty, pulling all of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) into a full-scale attack on Syria.

Thankfully, that never materialized. However, the statements made by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding the downing of a Turkish fighter jet might do just that.

Erdogan stated that the Turkish fighter jet which was reported missing in the region around the Eastern Mediterranean early Friday was actually shot down by Syria, which was later confirmed by Syrian state media outlet SANA according to The Hindu.

Prime Minister Erdogan made this formal allegation after conducting a joint search and rescue operation with Syria.

“It has been understood that our plane has been struck down by Syria,” Prime Minister Erdogan claimed in a written statement issued after an emergency meeting was held with the top figures of the military and government.

“Turkey will announce its final position and take necessary steps with determination after the incident is entirely clarified,” Erdogan further stated without clarifying on any retaliatory measures Turkey might take.

According to a Turkish military statement issued early Friday, the fighter jet lost radio contact with its base somewhere over the Eastern Mediterranean near the Syrian city of Latakia.

SANA reported that the military identified an “unidentified aerial target” flying at high speed and low altitude.

“The Syrian anti-air defenses counteracted with anti-aircraft artillery, hitting it directly,” SANA said. “The target turned out to be a Turkish military plane that entered Syrian airspace and was dealt with according to laws observed in such cases.”

In other words, the Turkish fighter jet breached sovereign Syrian airspace and they reacted like any country under siege would.

With the two pilots of the Turkish jet still missing, the official statement from Turkey stated that they “will determinedly take necessary steps” in response to the Syrian action.

According to The Hindu, some Turkish television reports indicated that the plane was on a reconnaissance flight, while the Turkish military has not provided any details on the jet’s mission.

While Syrian vessels chose to help in the search and rescue mission, they did state that the jet violated the airspace above their territorial waters and that they fired upon the jet before realizing it was Turkish.

Laughably, one commentator, Ilter Turan, a professor of political science at Istanbul’s Bilgi University, claimed that the action was clearly “hostile” even if the jet actually violated Syrian airspace.

“They could have either sent their planes to confront it or force it to land, it is a hostile act by any standard,” Turan claimed.

However, this ignores the fact that Syria feels, understandably I might add, that they might be attacked at any time by surrounding nations or Western forces.

Turan predicted – accurately, in my opinion – that Syria would actually avoid escalating tensions with Turkey.

This is likely since Turkey could quite easily invoke Article Five and thus bring the wrath of NATO, which has had an itchy trigger finger since the destruction of Libya, upon the entire nation of Syria.

Only time will tell but hopefully we will not see any more bloodshed and yet another brutal NATO invasion in the Middle East, or anywhere for that matter.

Yemenis flee to Aden from heavy fighting, US strikes [video included]

June 24, 2012

Heavy fighting and US assassination drone strikes have forced many Yemenis to move across the south from the Abyan province to the port city of Aden, Press TV reports.

“The US assassination drone strikes came and destroyed many homes, killing many people inside those homes throughout the province of Abyan. It is enough. We call on the US to stop interfering,” one refugee told Press TV.

Some of the refugees, who have been living in an abandoned old school for a year now, complained about tough living conditions.

Chris Busby: the Forsmark nuclear waste Repository plan [video]

June 12, 2012

The future of nuclear energy depends on the industry finding somewhere to put the high level waste. This is radioactive for millions of years and must be isolated from the environment. The hitherto intractable problem was apparently solved by the Swedish nuclear industry who proposed a plan to encapsulate it in copper canisters and bury it in tunnels 500m underneath the Baltic sea at Forsmark. The full environmental impact report was released last year; the government requirements are that the company SKB show that the waste will not emerge from the canisters between 100,000 years and 1 million years. After studying the report in detail it became clear that the design was flawed because it did not include consideration of the Helium gas produced from the alpha emitters. The volume of gas in each canister would cause it to explode long before 100,000 years resulting in the contamination of the Baltic Sea by the equivalent of 2000 Chernobyl accidents. Back to the drawing Board guys!

Is Prepping Worth it? What if Nothing Happens? Is it all a Waste?

by Gaye Levy, Contributor
Activist Post
June 24, 2012

Earlier this year, I ran across an blog post on the Directive 21site that asked the question: What if Nothing Happens? The context was that of prepping. You know what I mean: the time, the expense, the worry, the whole shebang. Is it worth it, and, more to the point, will all of this effort be wasted? Now I happen to know that a lot of naysayers out there will point to the year 2K brouhaha as an example of why prepping is folly.

Myself, I like to think that I bring a very unique perspective to that particular time since, as an old COBOL programmer, I knew how the computer code of old would blow up with the turn of the millennium. I also know many people who were frantically involved in code conversions, and even I provided a bit of consulting to the telecommunications industry in that regard.

So why was Y2K a non-event? I would say that the diligent preparation on the part of governments and businesses played a huge role in insuring that utility companies continued to work, the ATM machines continued to function and that daily life continued without a hiccup. (That is not to say that I did not have $5,000 in small bills hidden under my mattress, however.)

Coming back in to the present, we have six more months for the Doomsday 2012 events to unfold. And now that the end of the Mayan calendar has pretty much been dispelled, what is left?

Well let me see:

  • Hurricane season is coming up
  • Wildfires are spreading in the South and Midwest
  • Shoot-em-ups of innocent bystanders are occurring in our cities
  • Underemployment and unemployment means more and more citizens are living below poverty
  • Governments around the globe are facing bankruptcy and the potential for total collapse

So gee, have a nice day too, right?

But if a list of potential disasters and economic calamities is not worrisome and you – or more likely your friends and relatives – groan at the effort of prepping, let us ask the question: What if nothing happens?

Jeff, the Berkey Guy and his sidekick David articulate the answer well.

What if Nothing Happens?

That’s exactly the question I’ll ask you.

You, the prepared individual. You, the prepper who purchases food to have in the event your employment situation loses its revenue temporarily, or a minor movement of the earth closes local markets and grocers. You, the healthy student of nutrition. You, the responsible parent who works to provide the necessities of life for your children and grandchildren and works to secure those ongoing needs. You, the involved citizen who talks with your neighbors and cares about the safety of your neighborhood. You, the owner of a vehicle who pays auto insurance for security against an undesired vehicular event. You, the purchaser of health insurance for a family whose health is fundamental and essential. You, the ardent securer of water storage, just in case another 5-day boil-water-alert happens this month. You, the consumer who also produces constructively while others are socially-secure thanks to your payroll contributions. You, whose money is lent to banks whose bail-outs secured enormous pensions. You, whose income tax returns without interest.

What if not one thing happens this year to drastically – or even minimally- inconvenience your lifestyle?

In the event that your storage of food, water, medical, and other resources remains unmoved out of necessity, then count yourself fortunate. This is what we hope for, although we’d be willfully ignorant to discredit the vulnerabilities of our current environments, local and global!

If your application of primitive or pioneer skills finds use within recreational or standard homestead practices instead of emergent necessity, then continue enjoying their practice in peace. Please carry on and experience the following in your endeavors to be self-reliant:

  • the joy of cultivating your plants and harvesting the literal fruits (& vegetables) of your labor
  • the satisfaction of knowing basic skills to make many of the leisurely staples such as flour, pasta noodles, sausage, buttermilk, cheese, bread, and so much more
  • the stewardship of slaughter & butchery
  • the responsible care and maintenance of firearms and useful weapons/tools
  • the autonomy of filtering and purifying water for all-things-related to its supply and use
  • the comfort of attending to basic medical issues, affording you the avoidance of over-crowded emergency waiting rooms, and unnecessary exposure to other contagious pathogens
  • the peace of mind that your food is not unnaturally grown and crammed intocompact living conditions
  • the security that comes with protection against a failing economy and currency, through precious metals
  • the integrity of enjoying life’s experience as a perpetual learner, an ever-studious pupil
  • the unmatched fulfillment which attends precious family moments of teaching, learning, and sharing
  • the limitless advantages of perpetual personal progress

Natural disasters are going to happen as part of life. Adverse events are somewhat out of our control, so we prepare for those things which we can control: having something rather than having nothing. Knowing-by-doing rather than not knowing and doing nothing.

And if nothing happens, we have the satisfaction of having prepared for when it does.

. . . David SafeWater at Directive 21

The Final Word

From time to time we all need to be reminded that all of our efforts to prepare are not a waste of time, money or energy. Both mother nature and human nature tend to send us curve balls — both large and small — all of the time. Some are bigger than others, but regardless of the magnitude, these burps in our lives and in our normal routine can be disruptive if not disastrous to those that do not prepare.

As so well said by David in his article, there is a certain inner peace and sense of satisfaction that comes from being self-reliant. As a prepper, you can stand with your head high and be proud: self-reliance is a grand adventure of the highest magnitude.

Spotlight: The article What If Nothing Happens? originally appeared on The Berkey Guy Blog in March 2012.

The Berkey Guy has been a sponsor of Backdoor Survival and Activist Post from almost the get go. He introduced me to the Royal Berkey water filter which I have to tell you is far far superior to any my old pitcher based Brita or refrigerator PUR system. The filters in the Berkey last a really long time making this an extremely economical source of healthy drinking water. According to my math, 6,000 gallons from two filters = less than 2 cents a gallon (this is exclusive of the cost of the unit itself).

Mall roof collapses in Ontario [video]

Russia Today
June 24, 2012

At least four people have been injured after a roof collapsed at a busy mall in the Ontario city of Elliot Lake. Rescue teams were on the scene searching for possible victims after the town’s mayor declared a state of emergency.

The incident has reportedly triggered a gas leak, prompting emergency officials to shut off the mall’s power. In the wake of the incident, mayor Rick Hamilton has declared a local state of emergency.

Authorities confirmed that at least four people had suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital, but none of the injuries are considered to be life-threatening.
