Bitcoin evangelist Andreas M Antonopoulos has appeared before the Australian Senate as part of an inquiry into the local treatment of digital currencies.

The prominent bitcoin ‘guru’ made the case for bitcoin, saying that its unique architecture and payment mechanism had important implications for network access, innovation, privacy, individual empowerment, consumer protection and regulation.

Claiming that bitcoin represented a “unique opportunity in two areas for Australia”, Antonopoulos said:

“Bitcoin can introduce much needed competition in the retail payments industry, undercutting the expensive systems offered by credit and debit cards, whilst significantly improving security and privacy for consumers.”

“Secondly, the bitcoin industry can establish Australia at the forefront of the next wave of innovation of financial services. A wave that can extend financial services to more than two billion people throughout Southeast Asia, who are currently unbanked,” he continued.

The announcement, which follows on from the launch of a pilot scheme that saw $25,000-worth of bitcoin sold in 10 weeks, raises the number of retail locations offering over-the-counter bitcoin purchases in the country to 300.

The scheme is run by Amsterdam-based bitcoin seller Bit4coin in conjunction with Berlin-based firm MK Payment.

Dolf Diederichsen, CEO at Bit4coin said:

“We are excited with the early success we are seeing in the market. The launch has exceeded our expectations, and we are very happy to quickly expand the reach and make Bitupcard even more accessible to more customers.”

Ibrahim Tarlig, CEO of MK Payment, added: “The market reception has been very positive and many customers told us that they would like to buy Bitupcard e-vouchers, but that the stores were simply too far away from where they lived or worked.”

BREAKING — Dell Expands Bitcoin Payments to UK and Canada

UPDATE (19th February, 2015 17:00 GMT): Updated with comment from Dell CIO Paul Walsh.

dellDell has announced it has expanded its bitcoin payments program to consumers in the UK and Canada.

The announcement was revealed today at eTail West, an annual e-commerce conference, during a keynote address by CIO Paul Walsh.

In remarks, Walsh suggested that the decision was prompted by customer demand and the positive feedback the company had so far received for its US offering.

Walsh said:

“We’re hearing from our customers around the world that they want the option to use bitcoin when buying Dell products, so we are excited to deliver bitcoin as a payment method on Dell.com to our customers in Canada and the UK.”

Dell has been accepting bitcoin for purchases via its US store since July 2014. The company will continue to receive local currency from Coinbase in exchange for bitcoin orders, in this case GBP and the Canadian dollar.

Earning $56.9bn in revenue in 2013, Dell remained the largest merchant in the bitcoin space until December when it was replaced by tech giant Microsoft.

The news also follows the decision by e-commerce leader Overstock to expand its bitcoin payment option to global consumers, though it has since reported struggles encouraging international customers to use bitcoin.
