Greek government on brink of collapse over debt crisis

Davi Gow and Helena Smith in Athens
The Guardian
November 3, 2011

The Greek government stands on the point of collapse, with the country set for a general election over membership of the euro rather than the referendum planned for early December.

Calls for a national unity government embracing the opposition also intensified as EU political leaders and financial markets demanded an end to the regional uncertainty unleashed by a small country on the periphery of the eurozone and called for measures to prevent a slide into Europe-wide slump.

George Papandreou called an emergency meeting of his cabinet for noon local time (10am GMT) on Thursday after his finance minister broke ranks over the referendum and several socialist deputies quit or threatened to quit his Pasok bloc in parliament.

Papandreou’s political survival both as prime minister and head of the Pasok party will be determined by the cabinet meeting. Filing into parliament for the session MPs said they would listen to the leader’s assessment of the Cannes meeting before they “made up their minds” as to whether to back the confidence motion.

Occupy protesters to move for Remembrance Day

CBC News
October 31, 2011

Demonstrators are moving their tents out of Halifax’s Grand Parade for two ceremonies, but they vow to return after Remembrance Day.

Participants of Occupy Nova Scotia say they’re leaving out of respect for a Dignity Day ceremony on Nov. 9 and a Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11.

They plan to hold a rally and cleanup next Sunday and be in Victoria Square two days later.

Michael Anthony told CBC News they reached consensus after much debate. He considers the move a trade-off.

“We’re here, we’re established and people are supporting us, and a lot of people might not support us if we leave because they’ll see that as a compromise. But if we don’t leave, a lot more people won’t support us,” he said Monday.

Peanut butter prices set to spike in wake of shortage

Ray Henry and Sarah Skidmore
The Globe and Mail
October 12, 2011

Consumers should be prepared to shell out a bit more for peanut butter soon.

Another hot, dry summer in key producing states and competition from more profitable crops like cotton have significantly shrunk the U.S. peanut crop this year. The tight supply means consumers will soon pay more for yet another grocery staple.

U.S. farmers are expected to produce roughly 1.8 million tons of peanuts this year, down nearly 13 per cent from last year, according to a survey released Wednesday by the Department of Agriculture. Assuming that estimate holds, it would be the smallest harvest recorded since 2006.

Peanut butter producers already have plans to hike prices for peanut butter significantly in the next few weeks. Those who package nuts for snacks say they are watching their competitors to determine whether price hikes will be necessary.

The One Percent: Gigantic Government + Gigantic Corporations = Massive Wealth Inequality In America

The Economic Collapse
October 26, 2011

Today, there are protests all over America that are targeting “the one percent” and all of the wealth and power that they have accumulated. Unfortunately, many of the solutions that these protesters are advocating simply will not work and will not lead to less wealth inequality. To understand this, you have to understand how we got to this point. Over the past several decades, our federal government has exploded in size and our large corporations have exploded in size. In fact, we have seen this pattern happen pretty much all over the world. Governments and corporations all over the globe are getting much bigger. Whenever you have very, very large concentrations of money and power like that, it is going to lead to massive wealth inequality. The Occupy Wall Street protesters would like to frame this debate as “socialism vs. capitalism”, but the truth is that wherever you find big government you will almost always find big corporations, and wherever you find big corporations you will almost always find big government. Sure, they spar once in a while, but the reality is that big government and big corporations work in tandem most of the time. Sometimes big government has the upper hand and sometimes big corporations have the upper hand, but they are both collectivist institutions. Wherever you find collectivism in the world, you will find an elite that receives most of the benefits while the rest of the population suffers. In the United States today, our gigantic government is thriving and our gigantic corporations are thriving and the middle class is rapidly shrinking. The solution to this is not to replace one form of collectivism with another form of collectivism. Rather, what we need is to go back to what our founding fathers intended. They were extremely suspicious of large concentrations of wealth and power, and they intended for us to live in a capitalist system where individuals and small businesses had the freedom to compete and thrive.
