NATO’s summit in Chicago has been greeted by crowds of activists pouring into the city streets to protest against the bloc’s costly and deadly wars. Saturday saw clashes with police and further arrests, with the protesters pledging their numbers will swell over the next two days. RT’s Anastasia Churkina is in Chicago.

Nurses lead thousands in Chicago anti-NATO march

Thousands of protesters took to Chicago’s streets ahead of the NATO summit due to kick off there on Sunday. National Nurses United teamed up with trade unions and the Occupy movement to form a mass rally in the Windy City.
The NNU members demanded a Robin Hood tax to be introduced on banks’ financial transactions. That demand was rather a supplement to the protest against proposals to cut back nurses pensions.
“We’ve worked 30 years for them and don’t want to get rid of them,” said Deb Holmes, a nurse at a hospital in Worcester.
Former Rage Against the Machine guitarist and Occupy activist Tom Morello performed live at the event.
Despite the largely peaceful nature of the event, one man was arrested for aggravated battery of a police officer.
While marching through the streets a group of several hundred protesters split up from the main rally and rushed through the city shouting all kinds of anti-NATO slogans and making caustic remarks to police officers. Over a dozen of these activists were arrested.

The Friday March has merely been a rehearsal for a really big rally scheduled for Sunday, when the NATO summit opens. The thousands of protesters that continue to arrive in Chicago have put the city in security overkill mode.
NATO in crosshairs of fierce criticism
The hometown of the ruling US President Barack Obama plays host to this year’s NATO summit and the event has turned city police paranoid over security matters in already the most-watched city in the US.
“We’ve got a bunch of peaceful protesters here, and they [police] spent millions and millions of dollars on this week alone. It’s absolutely absurd,” told RT Sam Molik, protester from Occupy Tulsa.
Chicago authorities have spent millions of dollars on new police gear.
NATO critics flocking to the city to stage mass protests make no secret of their negative attitude towards the alliance. Demonstrators want the money pumped into the summit and its security to be spent on real needs.
RT’s Anastasia Churkina interviewed people on the city’s streets and their remarks about NATO have been overwhelmed by bitter resentment.
“NATO is a US-commanded military alliance responsible for wars and war crimes on a global basis,” one woman told RT.
“NATO as an organization no longer has a mandate. Occupy Chicago denies and demands NATO disband. They have no more purpose. They are spending our taxpayer dollars on wars and to bomb and destroy and murder civilians all over the world,” accuses Occupy Chicago press committee member Micah Philbrook.
“There is a pro-peace majority in the United States. We oppose war. We oppose the world’s pre-eminent war-making organization NATO. And we have a human agenda and a humane agenda that has no place for war,” political analyst and writer Rick Rozoff told RT.

The third formation of the year was reported on May the 12th and was located at the rather elaborately named ‘Eaton Water Copse’ (near to Hannington) in Wilts, just North of Swindon. While there are many that would argue that Swindon does not have many endearing qualities, one only has to look at the countryside surrounding it to see that even though its town centre may not be the most picturesque, its encompassing landscape more than makes up for it. The rolling hills and grand expanses of farmers fields; a collage all shapes, sizes and colours, make a beautiful frame for the concrete and red brick town centre.
Swindon holds a very special place in my heart, not because I have ever spent much time there, or because I have any particularly fond memories of events there, but because it is the home of one of my favourite literary heroines ‘Thursday Next’ – Jasper Ffordes wonderfully funny, clever and unconventional creation. Sorry I digress!
The formation was a quintuplet; this is a ‘five dot on a dice’ design, one circle in the centre and four circles surrounding it in equidistant positions. It is a classical crop circle design-type. There has been a whole catalogue of variations on this pattern, with circles of varying sizes, some connected by a ring, others not, even one where (most unusually), the four orbiting circles touched the centre circle. Researcher and geometer Michael Glickman affectionately identifies them as the mother circle (in the centre) and her daughters (orbiting circles). This is so endearing that it is now how I think of them as well!

A glimpse through any of the early books about the phenomenon will throw up a whole raft of quintuplets. While the quintuplet is essentially about the number four (it is four-fold in nature), it does have a curious connection to five through its anchoring centre circle. The quintuplet has long fascinated crop circle researchers/geometers (as evidenced above), because it has been such a reoccurring design, but it was geometer Allan Brown that really propelled the quintuplet into superstardom. He showed that almost every quintuplet-shaped crop circle carried a hidden property. That hidden property was that they all Squared the Circle.

The National Defense Authorization Act signed by President Obama on the eve of the New Year has now come to a standstill. Since its genesis, the NDAA has been confronted with heavy criticism claiming the act is unlawful and on Wednesday District Judge Katherine Forrest agreed. The section 1021 calls for the indefinite detention of Americans and as of now is unconstitutional, but late Thursday an amendment to the NDAA ruling was brought forward on the House floor. Tangerine Bolen, executive director for Revolution Truth, joins us to analyze the future of the NDAA.
