That the warmongers are so desperate to frame Iran for any and every attack taking place in the world is worrying, to be sure, but at the end of the day, perhaps there is something hopeful we can take away from this. The fact that the Patrick Clawsons and Gary Harts and Dick Cheneys of the world are dreaming up their provocations and incidents to justify an invasion of Iran means that, at the very least, some measure of justification is still needed to embroil the NATO powers in another war. Once again we find that it is the people who hold the power, and it is the people who must be convinced about the need for this war. Here in 2012, now 9 years after the debacle in Iraq and 1 year after the debacle in Libya, are going to need more convincing than ever that it is necessary to deploy the war machine yet again for another round of military adventurism. And now that the mainstream media has expended whatever was left of their credibility pimping the “weapons of mass destruction” propaganda, the so-called political elite realize that nothing less than a spectacular provocation will do to rouse the public’s ire.

LAST WEEK, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) refused to accept the appeal of their ruling allowing for the extradition of Babar Ahmad and four others to the United States.
This decision, from a court whose very purpose is to ensure human rights are upheld, has been widely condemned by human rights groups and advocates, who are convinced the decision will do just the opposite.
The appeal was largely based on the fact that if the men are extradited to the US, they will face years of torturous solitary confinement in America’s notorious maximum security prisons.
There is another disturbing aspect of the ruling, however, that is less discussed, but equally worrisome: that these men’s chances of getting a fair trial will also be compromised by the pre-trial conditions in which they are likely to be held.
Because Ahmad and the others fall under the category of terror suspects, there is a strong likelihood that if their extradition proceeds, they will be held in pre-trial detention facilities with special administrative measures (Sams) in place.
Sams were established by the federal government in 1996 to deal with certain gang leaders who had demonstrated substantial risk that their “communication or contact with persons could result in the death or serious bodily injury to persons.” Since 9/11, the need for an inmate to have “demonstrated” their reach was relaxed, and the department of justice began to use Sams, pre-trial, for terrorism suspects.
So what this means for pre-trial defendants is that they are not only held in the kind of extreme isolation that is routine in facilities like ADX Florence — the federal super-max prison where inmates spend 22 to 23 hours per day in a completely sealed and soundproof cell, and maybe an hour or so in an outdoor cage for solitary exercise — but they are also subjected to extra measures of isolation. This ensures both that they completely cut off from the outside world and that the outside world is cut off from them.
A defendant placed under Sams is usually only allowed to communicate with his immediate family (parents, siblings, spouse and children) and his attorney.
Letters to and from his approved family members can take up to six months to be cleared. Such prisoners cannot write to or receive visits from anyone else: friends, extended family or supporters; and they can have absolutely no contact with the media. In addition to the gag that is placed on these defendants, the small number of people with whom they are allowed to have contact are also gagged, as they, too, are bound to abide by the Sams.
So, for instance, an attorney who goes to see her client in solitary somewhere like ADX Florence may notice that her client is deteriorating under the conditions of his confinement. But she cannot discuss those conditions with anyone — not the media, not even the prisoner’s family.

There’s another, even more chilling reason for lawyers to be concerned about defending clients placed under Sams. Attorneys risk prosecution if they violate any of the terms of the Sams, and precedent has it that the sanction for any violations will be much more severe than the proverbial slap on the wrist. This past June, a ten-year prison sentence was upheld in federal court for Lynne Stewart, a 73-year-old attorney who was convicted in 2005 of “providing aid to terrorism” for sharing statements from her client, Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, with the media.
The prosecution originally sought a 30-year sentence. Stewart, who has been treated for breast cancer, fears she will die in prison.

Chossudovsky: Turkey Already Waging War on Syria [video]

Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey has told his country to prepare for war against Syria relying on an unproven shelling that landed in Turkey from Syrian territory.
The Turkish military has fired mortar shells into Syria for the fourth day in a row after a number of projectiles slammed into the southern border province of Hatay.
Press TV has interviewed Michel Chossudovsky, Centre for Research on Globalization, Montreal, about the recent steps Turkey has taken and how the plan for NATO involvement inside Syria may unfold.
What follows is an approximate transcript of the interview.
Press TV: Five days of military strikes and now the Turkish prime minister is calling on his country to prepare for war.
With the way things have gone so far, would Turkey had come to this regardless of the mortar that fell in from Syria?
Chossudovsky: Well, this has been a hidden agenda for quite some time. The war on Syria is already de-facto because Turkey is supporting the Free Syrian Army; it’s training the rebels; it’s allowing for the influx of mercenaries through its territory; it is providing logistics to the terrorists inside Syria; and it has Special Forces also within Syrian territory.
And I should say that the military high command has concern that it’s supporting the Muslim Brotherhood as well involved in insurrection. So the war is de-facto.
The incident is being used as a pretext when in fact even according to the Western media, we do not know who is behind this shelling incident inside Turkish territory.
The Ankara government blames Damascus; it blames the Syrian armed forces, but if you look at some of the press reports emanating from the New York times on the one hand and the German media, there is absolutely no proof that these shots were actually done by the Syrian governmental forces.
And they could have been done by the Free Syrian Army. They could also be used deliberately as a pretext to enable Turkey to proceed to the next phase of this war.
Now what is also of course very disturbing is the fact that Turkey as a member of NATO may well invoke Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which stipulates that an attack on one member is an attack on all members. It’s the doctrine of collective security and this might be the first step for a NATO involvement.
Press TV: That leads me to my next question, do you think that through this escalation of this conflict we are going to see direct NATO involvement, because we are already getting reports that NATO artillery and weapons are already being used by the Turkish military in their shelling?
Chossudovsky: Well, it’s clear that Turkey is already involved. Turkey is already involved inside Syria.
Now what I think is possible is that Turkey is going to demand the formation of some kind of a buffer zone, which essentially means the occupation of certain border areas of Syria. This has been on the drawing boards of military planners for quite some time. Turkey has territorial aspirations as far as Syria is concerned. But it is more than that.
The coast line, which links Turkey to Lebanon and Israel going through Syrian territory. This is also an objective, to gain control over that coastline.
In other words, we have to understand that Turkey is a major military power in the region; it is involved in the conflict; it is supporting mercenary fighters inside Syria; and there is the distinct danger of military escalation not only in terms of Turkish regular forces, which are now entering officially into Syrian territory, but also that this might extend to a subsequent NATO involvement under the doctrine of collective security.

A doctor who is working at the hospital describes injuries and deaths at the hospital, and also that there are people reporting symptoms of gas inhalation.
Bani Walid is on top of a mountain and is the home of the Warfalla tribe. It is currently besieged by other people – no food or medicine is allowed in and no one is allowed to leave.

A member of Silvio Berlusconi’s party has been forced to resign after being caught slashing the tires of a car owned by a disabled man.
Antonio Piazza handed in his resignation with extreme reluctance, saying his actions were the result of “a technical error, due to a momentary fit of rage”.
The trouble started when Piazza parked his Jaguar in a space reserved for disabled drivers in Lecco, a town on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy.
He was challenged by Giuseppe Scud-eri, a local man with 85 per cent disabilities, who politely asked him to vacate the spot. An argument ensued, the disabled man called the police over what he described as “a question of civility” and the politician was given an on-the-spot fine of about $102.
But half an hour later he sneaked back, pulled out a knife that he reportedly always carries, and slashed the tires of the disabled man’s Renault. His covert attack, in late August, was captured on security cameras and also witnessed by office workers.
