VIDEO — Arab League slams Israeli Syria strike, UK calls to lift rebel arms embargo

Russia Today
May 5, 2013

Syria says Israel has effectively declared war, after its planes bombed targets in Damascus, the second airstrikes in as many days. Syria’s state media says Israeli rockets targeted a military research centre on the outskirts of the capital. Video footage and eye witness accounts suggest the attacks hit weapons dumps, triggering large explosions.

Syria says a number of people were killed and wounded amid widespread destruction. The Arab League has condemned the strikes and demanded the UN Security Council act to stop any more. The League say there has been a “dangerous violation of an Arab state’s sovereignty”. Article 2 of the United Nations Charter bans the use of force against the territorial integrity of any state. RT’s Gayane Chichakyan in Washington and Polly Boiko in London told RT more about the reaction coming from the UK and the US.

Anti-drone protest in UK over domestic opening of Reaper control center

Russia Today

Anti-war groups have held a protest at a UK airbase from which the country has begun controlling its fleet of assassination drones in Afghanistan. Previously, the remote pilots were deployed only in the US.

Four anti-war groups – including CND, the Drone Campaign Network, Stop the War and War on Want – are staging a nonviolent protest on Saturday over drone use by the Waddington base in Lincolnshire.

About four hundred peace campaigners marched from the city of Lincoln to RAF Waddington.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) has opened drone control stations at the base located south of Lincoln this week to work in tandem with those already in place at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada. In 2010, the Ministry of Defence decided it needs the capability to remotely operate its armed drones from its own soil following a strategic security review.

Waddington is home to the new 13 squadron created for this purpose in October last year. The unit consists of about 100 personnel, including pilots, systems operators and engineers.

Together with the Nevada unit, the squadron will be remotely controlling UK’s drones, including the armed Reaper drones, which can drop laser-guided bombs and launch Hellfire missiles.

“We aren’t flying any more operations than we were before, but with the time differences between the US, Afghanistan and the UK, it is now possible for pilots at Waddington to work in relay with the those in the US,” a source told the Guardian while explaining the rationale behind the new unit.

The UK deploys a relatively small, but still sizable, drone fleet in Afghanistan, mostly consisting of surveillance aircraft. There are five British Reapers deployed in the region, and the MoD plans to double that number this year.

Protesters expressed fears over the UK’s development of the drone program, which is marred by its association with its US counterpart. Washington uses CIA-operated drones in the targeted killings of suspected militants, which critics say results in an unacceptable number of civilian deaths and has shaky legal and moral grounds.

“Drones, controlled far away from conflict zones, ease politicians’ decisions to launch military strikes and order extra-judicial assassinations, without democratic oversight or accountability to the public,” Rafeef Ziadah, War on Want senior campaign manager said. “Now is the time to ban killer drones – before it is too late.”

The British military insist that their use of drones saves soldiers’ and civilians’ lives, and is no different from that of piloted aircraft.

“UK Reaper aircraft are piloted by highly trained professional military pilots who adhere strictly to the same laws of armed conflict and are bound by the same clearly defined rules of engagement which apply to traditionally manned RAF aircraft,” an MoD spokesman said.

VIDEO — US Defense Sec. Hagel ‘confident’ chemical weapons used in Syria

Russia Today
April 25, 2013

The US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has said his intelligence services have, quote, ‘some confidence’, that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons on a small scale. He said it’s believed the nerve agent sarin was deployed against civilians and rebel fighters.

Governments block research on using magic mushrooms to treat depression

by Lance Devon
Natural News
April 10, 2013

(NaturalNews) “Magic” mushrooms grow naturally throughout the world. The psilocybin within magic mushrooms was used in ancient times for religious ceremonies and recreation. Today though, governments are frightening the population and are banning not only naturally-occurring mushrooms, but also the right to research their effect on human depression.

Psilocybin tests banned by the UK

Breakthrough research on the psilocybin within the magic mushroom has been stalled in the United Kingdom. The tests center around the mushroom’s ability to treat depression. Modern pharmaceutical anti-depressants are failing to treat people effectively. Research on a naturally-occurring mushroom could solve many problems, including cost, and more importantly, saving countless people from unwanted side effects. Still though, regulations are restricting the research of this naturally-occurring treatment.

President of the British Neuroscience Association, David Nutt, says he has been cleared on an ethical basis to fund tests on magic mushrooms, but the British government is blocking him from moving forward. David was awarded $844,000 from the UK’s Medical Research Council to conduct a full clinical trial in patients.

“We live in a world of insanity in terms of regulating drugs,” he told a neuroscience conference in London.

He has previously conducted small experiments on healthy volunteers and found that the psychedelic ingredient psilocybin has the ability to alleviate severe forms of depression in people who don’t respond to other treatments.

Pharmaceutical anti-depressants possess severe side effects

The amount of money Americans spend on prescribed anti-depressants annually has reached approximately ten billion dollars. The side effects of these medications are well known and include the following:

• Nausea
• Insomnia
• Anxiety
• Restlessness
• Decreased sex drive
• Dizziness
• Weight gain
• Tremors
• Sweating
• Fatigue
• Diarrhea
• Constipation
• Headaches

The list of side effects poses the question: are these medications worth it, especially when naturally-occurring alternatives exist? Side effects like anxiety, insomnia, and tremors are counterproductive in treating people, destroying their insides. Why would governments block research on natural remedies? Aren’t natural remedies the reason the human race has survived up until this modern era?

Rising anti-depressant use: Good or bad?

On the other hand, many psychiatrists believe all the diagnoses are good news, a sign that Americans are finally comfortable asking for help with their psychiatric problems. Is it really good news that people are getting diagnosed and treated with anti-depressants at an alarming rate? Why are so many people so depressed?

“Depression is a major public health issue,” said Dr. Kelly Posner, an assistant professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. “The fact that people are getting the treatments they need is encouraging.”

But are these medications really dealing with the problems at hand? Are the side effects worth it, or are they more damaging to the nervous system in the end?

Dr. Robert Goodman believes the real force behind increasing antidepressant prescription rates is the continuous pharmaceutical marketing to doctors and consumers. “You put those two together and you get a lot of prescriptions for anti-depressants,” he said. “It’s hard to believe that this many people are depressed, or that anti-depressants are the answer.”

Maybe all that the human race needs for surviving, thriving, and being happy is found growing straight from the Earth.

Sadly though, it’s very hard to understand the benefits of natural remedies like mushrooms, when governments are busy blocking research on them.

Currently, the FDA silences supplement companies from making claims about how their nutritional or herbal products heal people. This leads to a society intoxicated on pharmaceutical television ads, not comprehending the personal testimonies of those who have cured their disease naturally without drugs. Thanks to government laws that back drug company propaganda, close-mindedness to natural remedies does exist.

Nutritional deficiencies may be at the heart of depression

The silencing cannot stop the growing awareness, though. Each day the truth about pharmaceutical drugs is becoming known. There are better ways to treat depression. There are ways to deal with the root causes of poor health.

• Vitamin B-12 is important in the production of chemicals that regulate brain function.
• Studies show that Vitamin D helps prevent depression, especially seasonal affect disorder.
• Magnesium, iron and potassium work together to treat depression. Magnesium promotes healthy nerve impulses to the brain.

Even as governments block research on alternative natural treatments, there is an ever growing awareness to what the Earth has to offer, whether it is “magic” mushrooms or minerals like magnesium and iron. The truth cannot be silenced.

“Snoopers’ Charter” could allow monitoring of emails, phone and internet use in by many entities in UK

By Madison Ruppert
Editor of End the Lie
April 13, 2013

UK Home Office (Image credit: Canley at Wikipedia)

While it was previously thought that only intelligence, police and tax agencies in the United Kingdom would be able to peer into the private lives of citizens under the so-called “Snoopers’ Charter,” it is now being reported that dozens of public entities could have the same access.

This situation seems quite a bit like the proposed legislation in the United States known as CISPA where a massive number of entities have access to highly personal information. Similarly, as End the Lie recently reported, under the Next Generation Identification program many entities (including non-governmental ones) would have access to private biometric information.

Even giving such wide ranging access to personal information to “the taxman,” as the Telegraph put it, under the Communication Data Act seems absurd. It seems a great deal like how the American IRS claims the authority to read emails and other electronic communications without a warrant.

The proposed legislation ran into a lot of opposition last year with Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg saying a “fundamental rethink” was needed but with the support of powerful individuals it has made a return.

Under the Communications Data Act, all internet service providers would be forced to keep all records of the online activities of their customers for 12 months.

These records would include every single email, every posting on any social networking site or other forum and even all video or telephone calls made over the internet.

The ability of this legislation to continue to rear its ugly head seems to be largely based on the claim from Home Secretary Theresa May that it is vital to combat terrorism and other serious offenses and the “need for new laws.”

Even if that is the case, does it mean that all of the agencies reported by the Telegraph actually need all that access?

The agencies that have applied to use the powers under the Communication Data Act “include nine Whitehall departments, NHS trusts, the Environment Agency, the Charity Commission and the Pensions Regulator,” according to the Telegraph.

While some in the UK government continue to claim it is needed to fight terrorism and serious crime, the Home Office confirmed that it is considering all submissions from public bodies. This obviously begs the question, what kind of terrorism and serious crime is the Charity Commission and Environment Agency fighting?

“This scheme is Orwellian,” said Dominic Raab, one of the 40 Conservative Members of Parliament standing against the legislation, according to the Telegraph.

“Intrusive surveillance powers should be limited to pursuing terrorists, pedophiles and villains – not enabling jobsworth inspectors at the Health and Safety Executive or council busybodies to snoop into the private lives of ordinary citizens,” Raab said.

The Home Office said 36 “groups” had submitted a “business case” stating that they wanted to be able to use the Communications Data Bill powers last year after a Freedom of Information Act request from privacy advocacy group Big Brother Watch.

However, as the Telegraph points out, the Home Office “counted local authorities and NHS trusts once each, making it unclear how many individual councils or health trusts were involved. Fire authorities, the Food Standards Agency and the Gambling Commission also submitted cases.”

The bodies allowed to have access to the information under the proposed legislation would, according to the Telegraph, have to obtain a warrant to see the content of a message.

“A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said its officials used such powers rarely and only to help in its criminal investigations,” according to the Telegraph.

A spokesman for the Home Office said that ultimately Parliament would decide which bodies would have access to the records under the legislation.

The Communications Data Act is slated to be included in the Queen’s Speech next month.

UK invites Syria’s foreign-backed opp. members ahead of G8 meeting

PressTV
April 10, 2013

British Foreign Secretary William Hague

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has invited the leaders of Syria’s foreign-backed opposition coalition to London in a latest instance of foreign meddling in the domestic affairs of the Arab country.

Hague said on Tuesday that senior members of the foreign-backed opposition, the so-called Syrian National Coalition, will attend meetings with top diplomats from the G8 leading industrial states ahead of a formal summit of the group.

The individuals, including Ghassan Hitto, George Sabra and Soheir Atassi, are expected to ask for further support from the Western governments in their fight against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

The move by the British foreign secretary to invite members of the foreign-backed Syrian opposition, who are not considered representatives of the Syrian people, is considered the latest attempt by Western governments and their allies to interfere in the domestic affairs of Syria.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry has said he would meet with Syria’s foreign-backed opposition leaders in the British capital, adding that the US administration is looking at possible ways to help the militants in Syria.

Foreign ministers from eight countries – Britain, France, Germany, Canada, Russia, Italy, Japan and the United states – will hold formal talks on Thursday.

The ministers will discuss the issues of Syria and North Korea.

Hague also said that Britain and France would continue efforts to facilitate the arming of the militants in Syria.

In another act of foreign meddling, the Arab League handed Syria’s seat to the so-called National Coalition during a two-day summit held in the Qatari capital, Doha, on March 26.

Damascus condemned the move, saying the League has “forgotten that it is the people who grant the powers and not the emirs of obscurantism and sand.”

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
