INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ACTION – Oct. 6, 2012 — Canadian Peace Congress: End the Aggression Against Syria! Stop the Drive to War Against Iran!

Global Research
October 1, 2012

The Canadian Peace Congress condemns the ongoing foreign intervention in Syria and the escalating drive to war against Iran, and calls for the immediate withdrawal of all Canadian, NATO and foreign mercenary forces from the region. We further call upon the Conservative government of Stephen Harper to restore and normalize its diplomatic relations with Syria and Iran, and to re-orient Canadian foreign policy toward peace, international cooperation and solidarity.

The Harper government’s decision to adopt an international policy of belligerence, and to do so without consulting Parliament, is further evidence of its abandonment of a foreign policy of peace and diplomacy in favour of aggressive and hostile interference in the internal affairs of sovereign countries. Syria and Iran are member states of the United Nations and have expressed no hostile intent towards Canada or its people. Prime Minister Harper is actively contributing to the danger of war, through hostile policies that are out of step with the Canadian peoples’ longstanding support for peace.

The Canadian government has allied itself with a minority of Western governments who, along with pro-war forces within Israel and a few reactionary Arab regimes, are seeking new pretexts for intervention and war. These include the protection of human rights or the prevention of the alleged proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. These objectives cannot be achieved by breaking diplomatic relations, imposing economic sanctions, arming foreign mercenaries, or forging international campaigns for regime change and by installing puppet governments favourable to the strategic goals of the major western power.

Foreign intervention, sanctions and military aggression only weaken the human and democratic rights of the Syrian and Iranian people, and diminish their ability to develop and improve their societies. The aftermath of NATO intervention in Libya last year, in which Canadian armed forces bombed Libyan territory, has been disastrous for the people of Libya who are now plunged into factional warfare. This, plus the catastrophic consequences of the military occupation of Iraq, including the deaths of over one million Iraqis, clearly indicate that the main victim of any war is the civilian population.

As in the case of Libya last year, the drive to interfere in Syria and Iran is driven by the strategic and economic interests of imperialist powers. These countries – including the United States, Britain, the European Union and Canada – choose militarism and war as their preferred option for expanding their spheres of influence and control over resources and markets. The result is destruction, displacement and despair to the peoples of the developing countries who have been targeted. Far from resolving conflicts, these policies of interference only deepen current crises and escalate the danger to world peace.

Pro-war forces have seized upon the many complexities in the situations in Iran and Syria, to promote misinformation and confusion. The threat to peace in the Middle East does not arise from countries who exercise their sovereign right to develop the nuclear energy industries to build their economies. Nor does it originate with countries who oppose Western efforts to re-colonize the Middle East and control its vast energy resources, through the New Middle East Plan. Rather, the concrete threat to peace is the existing conventional and nuclear weapons that the US, its NATO allies and Israel constantly brandish in their effort to destabilize the region, to demonize governments that oppose imperialist plans, and to justify interference and war.

The Canadian Peace Congress asserts that the direction of economic, political and social development in any country is the sole right of the people of that country to determine, without foreign interference. We hold this principle to be true for the people of Canada, as we hold it to be true for the people of Syria and Iran. We are completely opposed to any foreign political or military intervention, under any pretext. This includes efforts to interfere with and divert genuine democratic domestic movements.

The role of the Canadian government in both of these crises has been shameful. Under Stephen Harper’s Conservatives, Canada has abandoned its reputation as a country with an independent stance in international relations, and assumed the posture of a vocal NATO aggressor state. In all dimensions – political-diplomatic, economic and military – Canada’s recent policies toward Syria and Iran have been geared toward three goals:

  1. Isolate and neutralize sources of information that conflict with imperialist aims, by cutting off communication with the governments and peoples in Syria and Iran;
  2. Increase the suffering of the people and generate anti-government sentiment, by imposing economic sanctions that particularly target energy industries who produce for local consumption;
  3. Increase the active military threat in the region, by deploying warships and other military resources to the region.

These goals all directly serve the overall objective of pro-Western regime change in Syria and Iran, and the Harper government has campaigned hard internationally, to convince other countries to assume similar policies against both countries.

In the case of Syria, the Conservatives have also campaigned aggressively to create and promote a political opposition movement to the government. In November 2011, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly received a report that “virtually no one [in Syria] is calling for international military intervention” and that Syria was “without a clearly identifiable opposition with precise political ambitions.” Yet, just prior to that report, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird had met with the Syrian National Council and proclaimed them to be the legitimate opposition who has “continuously outlined their appetite for change.” It is unclear how Baird identified an organized and “legitimate” opposition when NATO could not, and it suggests that the Syrian National Council is little more than a pro-Western puppet government-in-waiting that has been fashioned by imperialist forces.

Furthermore, Canada has supported the arming of an estimated 40-60,000 foreign mercenaries to fight inside Syria. These mercenaries form the backbone of the Free Syrian Army, and indicate the degree of armed foreign intervention already underway in Syria. The recent elections in Syria had a higher voter turnout than in Canada, and a number of independents and government opponents were elected and have been included in the cabinet. The Syrian people have spoken, yet Canada and other interventionist forces continue to pick sides in an internal matter.

In the case of Iran, the frenzied drive to war has obscured certain significant facts from the public eye:

  1. Iran is a non-nuclear state and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and is under the supervision of the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Iran has repeatedly stated that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and not for military ends. The fact of the matter is that neither the IAEA nor the U.S. administration has been able to show any substantiated evidence about the weaponization of Iran’s nuclear energy program. The U.S. Secretary of Defence, Leon Panetta, has publicly conceded, “there is no evidence that Iran has a nuclear weapon.”

  2. Israel is a nuclear weapons state with an estimated 200-400 nuclear weapons, who has refused to join the NPT. There is no UN supervision over Israel’s nuclear activities. It has pre-emptively attacked other neighbouring states, and has threatened Iran with military attack many times.

  3. United States is a nuclear weapons state with more than 10,000 nuclear weapons, and it has not allowed any inspection of its nuclear facilities by the IAEA. The U.S. has used nuclear weapons against other countries, when it exploded two nuclear bombs on Japan and when it used uranium-enriched weapons in Iraq. The U.S. also has repeatedly threatened Iran with military attack, and has nuclear-equipped forces currently stationed in the region.

The Canadian Peace Congress supports the October 6 Day of Protest Against War, initiated by the Canadian Peace Alliance. After more than a year of conflict and violent foreign intervention, thousands of Syrian people have died. If governments like Canada are allowed to continue their current policies of aggression, interference and colonization, thousands more will die. All peace-supporting groups in Canada – including trade unions, faith communities and student groups – need to speak out and mobilize against intervention in Syria and Iran and the threat of a far broader war in the region.

The Canadian Peace Congress demands that the Canadian government:

  • Immediately withdraw Canadian military forces from the region, and oppose military intervention in Syria and Iran, under any pretext;

  • Restore diplomatic relations with Syria and Iran, remove sanctions, and support the peace initiatives of those states and organizations advocating a cease fire and negotiated end to the war;

  • Withdraw from NATO, which has a nuclear first-strike policy and complimentary sea- and land-based ballistic missile systems, and all other military alliances;

  • Promote full nuclear disarmament, beginning with the nuclear stockpiles of the United States, Israel and NATO;

  • Adopt a new independent Canadian foreign policy of peace, non-intervention and diplomacy in international relations.

The Canadian Peace Congress was formed in 1949 as an organization of Canadian people that works for world peace and disarmament.  We maintain that peace, not militarism and war, is the guarantor of democracy, human rights, and social and economic justice.  The Peace Congress is affiliated to the World Peace Council and is a founding member of the Canadian Peace Alliance.

Social Media, Smartphones And Police Ctreate A Stasi Web Of Surveillance

by Susanne Posel, Contributing Writer
White Owl Conspiracy
September 21, 2012

Twitter has released a report confirming that the US government leads the world in requesting information on their citizens. The Transparency Report shows the US government has made requests that are infringing on American privacy rights. Twitter states that “we’ve received more government requests in the first half of 2012, as outlined in this initial dataset, than in the entirety of 2011.”

As the US government sifts through the tweets US citizens are making and analyzing information from illegal means, there are decisions about particular citizens being made to justify the construction of an all-encompassing Big Brother network.

Cloud computing is also under surveillance as every conversation is recording and filed. While Microsoft denies this is true, the adherence to their rules and regulations explains that all your personal information is stored within Skype. In section 2 of their user contract explains: “Our primary purpose in collecting information is to provide you with a safe, smooth, efficient, and customized experience. Skype collects and uses, or has third party service providers acting on Skype’s behalf collecting and using, personal data relating to you, as permitted or necessary to . . .”

The Department of Homeland Security’s Delaware Information and Analysis Center (DIAC) “now offers a mobile app to report suspicious activities in real-time by attaching a photo, sending location information, or entering details about suspicious vehicles or persons. In addition, users can choose to make their report anonymously or can include contact information for follow-up by law enforcement.”

The Anti-Terrorism Mobile FORCE 1-2 App is designed for iPhone and Android users that create spies out of average citizens for the sake of the State. The information collected by users is funneled to a National Security Agency (NSA) Fusion Center to be disseminated with federal agencies and local law enforcement.

Using terrorism and 9/11 phone calls as a fear-mongering campaign to coerce the general public into participating in this new Stasi, the Delaware government hopes to keep its citizens “ever vigilant in the fight against terrorism and this new app is just one way for our citizens to help.”

Simultaneously, Symantec’s Norton Cybercrime Report states that cybercrimes involving smartphones are costing consumers $110 billion annually as these thieves peruse mobile devices and social networks looking for loopholes. Smartphones are sent fake bills which add to the telecommunications services and rack-up charges as well as implant viruses into devices through apps.

Infected phones infect other phones through sending of information, text messages and emails. Nameless, faceless hackers change segments of code and inject the malware into the smartphone. However, most mobile phone and telecommunications corporations still maintain that mobile applications are safe and there should be no precautions taken when downloading these apps.

The CIA-sponsored AntiSec hacker group was successful in stealing millions of ID numbers from Apple, Inc. from databases where the corporation had been storing user personal data. They then leaked this information out for the general public to see. However this action serves another purpose.

The FBI was also infiltrated by the same state-controlled hacker group wherein a laptop was “compromised and private data regarding Apple UDIDs was exposed. At this time, there is no evidence indicating that an FBI laptop was compromised or that the FBI either sought or obtained this data.” The bureau’s press office later posted on its Twitter account that it “never had” the information in question and that the reports its laptop was hacked were “totally false.”

While data mining, cell phone corporations are using mobile phone habits to decipher the predictive movements of users. Scientists from the University of Brimingham in the UK have revealed that they can predict the movements of mobile phone users through tracking the network usage in real time with algorithms that forecast probabilities. This means that cell phone corporations, if using this system could predict the future whereabouts of their customers at any time of the day or night.

As our cell phone become weapons of mass surveillance, police departments across the nation are installing more CCTV cameras to better spy on citizens. In Maryland, local police have been using speed cameras at intersections to watch citizens under the guise of mitigating damages caused by car accidents.

Researchers for the Defense Department have created working prototypes of bi-static radar that can utilize WiFi to spy on citizens through walls. In tests, a one foot think brick wall was used and the monitoring radar could send back visual data to be interpreted.

WiFi signals can be extended and are available virtually everywhere which makes the capability of transmitting information easier with radio signals and laptops.

With the siphoning of information from a wireless router, surveillance software can be used as well to see through walls. A person’s whereabouts can be correctly pinpointed by using WiFi signals that bounce off objects which can decipher speed, location and direction of an individual.

Justification for this technology is surmised as: “See Through The Wall (STTW) technologies are of great interest to law enforcement and military agencies; this particular device has the UK Military of Defense exploring whether it might be used in ‘urban warfare,’ for scanning buildings. Other more benign applications might range from monitoring children to monitoring the elderly.”

These surveillance grids are being implemented to compliment the State and Local Anti-Terrorism Traning (SLATT) program that defines for police departments what an extremist is and how to “recognize and report indicators of terrorism/criminal extremism.”

The SLATT’s definition of terrorism is vague and broad. It encompasses “the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.” While terrorism is meant to intimidate and coerce a population into submission, the local law enforcement is employed to play an integral part in bringing intelligence to the federal agencies and “international intelligence communities” involved with hindering terrorism.

The SLATT explains that those who use cash, stay in tight-knit groups, repeatedly use the word “God”, carry video or observation equipment and have hand-drawn maps are terrorists. The document goes on to explain that any type of surveillance that is not state-sponsored is terroristic in nature and should be reported.

Human Rights Watch: “Syrian Rebels” Guilty of Torture, Murder

Land Destroyer

As West’s narrative unravels – cognitive infiltration begins.
by Tony Cartalucci

September 19, 2012 – US, UK, NATO, Saudi, and Israeli backed terrorists carrying out a campaign of systematic atrocities in Syria have finally been acknowledged and reported on by Human Rights Watch, who has for nearly 2 years intentionally portrayed the conflict as one-sided violence carried out by the Syrian government alone.

With evidence and admissions emerging that the so-called “Syrian rebels” are in fact Libyan terrorists, armed, funded, and flown in by NATO to cross into Syria and attack government troops, organizations like Human Rights Watch have faced deteriorating legitimacy, even with watered-down admissions like their most recent report titled, “Syria: End Opposition Use of Torture, Executions.” In the report, Human Rights Watch admits that “armed opposition groups have subjected detainees to ill-treatment and torture and committed extrajudicial or summary executions in Aleppo, Latakia, and Idlib.”

Much of the torture described by Human Rights Watch involves obtaining false confessions by victims, admitting tat they are “shabeeha” militia men. The Western media has long excused terrorists operating in Syria for their atrocities, claiming that the victims were “suspected” shabeeha. It now appears, as was suspected all along, these victims were innocence, and the Western press, the BBC and CNN in particular, were complicit in covering up egregious crimes against humanity.

Human Rights Watch also acknowledged that those carrying out the atrocities are indeed the same groups being financed and armed by Western nations, and “urged countries assisting opposition groups to condemn publicly the human rights and humanitarian law abuses by those groups.”

Of course, despite the West using reports produced by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International – and other faux-NGOs funded and directed by the very interests arming terrorists in Syria – to justify the violent subversion of the Syrian government, it is already evident that reports illustrating that human rights abuses are being carried out by Western-backed terrorists will incur no condemnation, nor affect in any way the continued supplying of arms, cash, and covert military support.

“Syrian Rebels” Are Libyan Terrorists

The recent consulate attack in Benghazi, Libya, resulting in the death of US Ambassador Christopher Stevens, was carried out by the very terrorist groups the US and NATO armed and backed in the overthrow of the Libyan government in 2011. These same terrorists organizations, predominately led by the US State Department, United Nations, and the UK Home Office (page 5, .pdf)-listed Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), promptly directed fighters, cash, and arms, funneled through NATO-member Turkey, to assist in the violent overthrow of the Syrian government.

In November 2011, the Telegraph in their article, “Leading Libyan Islamist met Free Syrian Army opposition group,” would report:

Abdulhakim Belhadj, head of the Tripoli Military Council and the former leader of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, “met with Free Syrian Army leaders in Istanbul and on the border with Turkey,” said a military official working with Mr Belhadj. “Mustafa Abdul Jalil (the interim Libyan president) sent him there.”

Another Telegraph article, “Libya’s new rulers offer weapons to Syrian rebels,” would admit

Syrian rebels held secret talks with Libya’s new authorities on Friday, aiming to secure weapons and money for their insurgency against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, The Daily Telegraph has learned.

At the meeting, which was held in Istanbul and included Turkish officials, the Syrians requested “assistance” from the Libyan representatives and were offered arms, and potentially volunteers.

“There is something being planned to send weapons and even Libyan fighters to Syria,” said a Libyan source, speaking on condition of anonymity. “There is a military intervention on the way. Within a few weeks you will see.”

Later that month, some 600 Libyan terrorists would be reported to have entered Syria to begin combat operations and as recently as last month, CNN, whose Ivan Watson accompanied terrorists over the Turkish-Syrian border and into Aleppo, revealed that indeed foreign fighters were amongst the militants, particularly Libyans. It was admitted that:

Meanwhile, residents of the village where the Syrian Falcons were headquartered said there were fighters of several North African nationalities also serving with the brigade’s ranks.

A volunteer Libyan fighter has also told CNN he intends to travel from Turkey to Syria within days to add a “platoon” of Libyan fighters to armed movement.

CNN also added:

On Wednesday, CNN’s crew met a Libyan fighter who had crossed into Syria from Turkey with four other Libyans. The fighter wore full camouflage and was carrying a Kalashnikov rifle. He said more Libyan fighters were on the way.

The foreign fighters, some of them are clearly drawn because they see this as … a jihad. So this is a magnet for jihadists who see this as a fight for Sunni Muslims.

CNN’s reports provide bookends to 2011’s admissions that large numbers of Libyan terrorists flush with NATO cash and weapons had headed to Syria, with notorious terrorist LIFG commanders making the arrangements.

In essence, Syria has been under invasion for nearly a year by US and NATO-backed Libyan terrorists. Human Rights Watch now confirms that these terrorists are carrying out a brutal, systematic campaign of torture and extra-judicial murder. It should be remembered that they do so with Western, NATO, and Gulf State cash and weapons, as well as significant political support.

US-backed Syrian Terror Campaign Began in 2007 Under Bush, Continues Under Obama

A report published in 2007 by the New Yorker titled “The Redirection” (full article here), cited US, Saudi, and Lebanese officials who admitted that military and financial aid was already flowing to militant groups affiliated with both Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood with the aim of destabilizing Syria and Iran. Former intelligence agents were also cited, warning that the plan, then being implemented under the Bush administration, would lead to a catastrophic sectarian bloodbath – the very sectarian bloodbath now unfolding in Syria today.

In the report, it explicitly states:

“To undermine Iran, which is predominantly Shiite, the Bush Administration has decided, in effect, to reconfigure its priorities in the Middle East. In Lebanon, the Administration has coöperated with Saudi Arabia’s government, which is Sunni, in clandestine operations that are intended to weaken Hezbollah, the Shiite organization that is backed by Iran. The U.S. has also taken part in clandestine operations aimed at Iran and its ally Syria. A by-product of these activities has been the bolstering of Sunni extremist groups that espouse a militant vision of Islam and are hostile to America and sympathetic to Al Qaeda.” –Seymour Hersh, The Redirection (2007)

Hersh’s report would also include:

“the Saudi government, with Washington’s approval, would provide funds and logistical aid to weaken the government of President Bashir Assad, of Syria. The Israelis believe that putting such pressure on the Assad government will make it more conciliatory and open to negotiations.” –Seymour Hersh, The Redirection (2007)

The article would continue by explaining how already in 2007 US and Saudi backing had begun benefiting the Brotherhood:

“There is evidence that the Administration’s redirection strategy has already benefitted the Brotherhood. The Syrian National Salvation Front is a coalition of opposition groups whose principal members are a faction led by Abdul Halim Khaddam, a former Syrian Vice-President who defected in 2005, and the Brotherhood. A former high-ranking C.I.A. officer told me, “The Americans have provided both political and financial support. The Saudis are taking the lead with financial support, but there is American involvement.” He said that Khaddam, who now lives in Paris, was getting money from Saudi Arabia, with the knowledge of the White House. (In 2005, a delegation of the Front’s members met with officials from the National Security Council, according to press reports.) A former White House official told me that the Saudis had provided members of the Front with travel documents.” –The Redirection, Seymour Hersh

It is clear that the campaign to violently overthrow the Syrian government through the use of terrorists both domestic and foreign, all with ties to extremist groups including Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood began under Bush and continues to this day under current US President Barack Obama.

Video: Cass Sunstien’s Cognitive Infiltration 101 – As the West’s narrative falls apart, cognitive infiltration begins. Propagandists like Dinesh D’Souza attempt to compartmentalize responsibility by claiming Obama unilaterally carried out the long-planned operations and US support for Al Qaeda on his own – a manifestation of his “hatred for America.” In reality, Obama is simply carrying out the latest leg of a corporate-financier driven agenda decades in the making. D’Souza interviews Daniel Pipes, a Neo-Con salesman for the very policy Obama is carrying out, and a contemporary of fellow Neo-Cons who were amongst the most vocal supporters of the “united states of Islam” he claims Obama single-handedly created.
….

While methods of cognitive infiltration are attempted – most notably the recent “2016: Obama’s America,” – to manage public perception and revelations that the US is indeed militarily backing legions of Al Qaeda fighters from Libya to Syria and beyond,  Obama’s alleged ideological opponents, the Neo-Conservatives have literally penned letters to Obama imploring him to expand military support for terrorists operating in Syria – now exposed by Human Rights Watch as conducting vicious crimes against humanity.

The letter covered by Foreign Policy’s article, “Conservatives call on Obama to establish ‘safe zones’ in Syria,” was signed by notorious Neo-Conservative co-conspirators in the invasion of Iraq including Elliott Abrams, Karl Rove, Paul Bremer, Robert Joseph, and Douglas Feith, along with advisors to the Mitt Romney campaign, including Eric Edelman, Jamie Fly, Robert Kagan, and Stephen Rademaker, as well as Syrian National Council member, Radwah Ziadeh.

Radwah Ziadeh, it should be remembered, is also a “senior fellow” of the US State Department’s US Institute for Peace (USIP) which has just revealed it is behind training, coaching, and tutoring Syria’s opposition leaders as well as preparing Syria’s new constitution, currently being called a, “transition strategy document.”

Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the Neo-Cons’ letter is that it essentially calls for a Libya-style no-fly zone:

We urge you to take immediate steps, in close and continuing consultation with the Congress, to work with regional partners to establish air-patrolled “safe zones” covering already liberated areas within Syria, using military power not only to protect these zones from further aggression by the Assad regime’s military and irregular forces, but also to neutralize the threat posed by the Syrian dictatorship’s chemical and biological weapons.

Clearly, US involvement in both the Libyan and Syrian conflicts is not an exclusive feature of the “Obama administration,” but rather preceded it, permeates it, and will certainly survive it should Obama fail to be reelected in 2012. The only difference will be the narrative that is used to sell it for the next 4 years.

Bottom Line

Even the West’s own NGOs can no longer maintain the illusion that the wave of terror created to overthrow Wall Street and London’s enemies are somehow “freedom fighters.” Cognitive infiltration – the creation of “conspiracy theories” to spin and control public perception versus an emerging alternative media – is attempting to compartmentalize responsibility for the West’s use of listed terror organizations and the myriad of crimes they’ve carried out from Libya to Syria and beyond.

By rejecting the tired left-right paradigm, and realizing that there is a singular agenda, transcending all political parties and alleged “ideologies,” leaves bare the truth behind this agenda, regardless of who inherits it next. By rejecting these false paradigms, we hobble new narratives that attempt to carry forward this singular agenda – like Mitt Romney’s “American Exceptionalism,” and the establishment’s attempt to revitalize the fraudulent “War on Terror” narrative.

The agenda does not change, because the corporate-financier interests driving it do not change. If we aspire to change or obstruct this agenda of achieving global hegemony for the benefit of special interests at the cost of the people, we must identify, boycott, and replace the corporations and institutions themselves, not wrestle endlessly with their troupe of proxies, politicians, and controlled paradigms.

Canada cuts ties with Iran, closes embassy, orders Iranian diplomats home

Yahoo! News Canada
September 7, 2012

by The Canadian Press

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia – Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird says he’s cutting ties with Iran amid worries about the safety of Canadian diplomats in the country.

Baird says the Canadian embassy in Tehran will close immediately and Iranian diplomats in Canada have been given five days to leave.

He says he’s worried about the safety of diplomats in Tehran following recent attacks on the British embassy there.

He’s also warning ordinary Canadians to avoid travel to Iran.
