Air Traffic Controllers Pick the Wrong Week to Quit Using Radar

LAS VEGAS — It’s a Twilight Zone episode waiting to happen. A commercial pilot at 30,000 feet gets sudden instructions from air traffic control on the ground that another plane is headed his way.
The pilot diverts as directed but then controllers tell him a third plane is now in his path, and then a fourth and fifth. Yet when the pilot looks out his window, he sees nothing in the sky.
This is the kind of spoofing attack that could become possible, according to security researcher Andrei Costin, who spoke at the Black Hat security conference on Wednesday about serious vulnerabilities in a new air traffic control system that is currently being deployed in the U.S. and elsewhere.
The system, known as Automated Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast, or ADS-B, uses radio frequencies for communication between one plane and another and between planes and the ground. It’s already widely used in Australia, where planes are required to be ADS-B compliant by 2013, and is expected to replace radar for air traffic control of commercial planes by 2020.
But according to Costin, a doctoral candidate at Eurecom, a graduate school and research institute in France, ADS-B is marred by serious security vulnerabilities that would make it possible for someone to spoof a plane and inject false messages into the system, leading air traffic controllers to “see” planes where none exist.

Urban Warfare Drills: Psy-Op Acclimating Americans to Military on US Streets

The US Special Operations Command (USSOC) has conducted “training exercises” over Minneapolis.
In a twofold effort, the US Armed Forces are acclimating the American public to seeing military everywhere as well as being able to train their soldiers in real time on US streets in a manipulative effort to circumvent Posse Comitatus.
Both the local police department and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) collaborated, according to authorities, to decide on training exercise times and locations although the general public was unaware of these war games until they were evident in their local skies.
The USSOC stated :
“If you see military helicopters flying low over Minneapolis, don’t be alarmed. They’re just training in an urban environment. The U.S. Special Operations Command will be conducting exercises until the beginning of September. This week they’re using helicopters, including Black Hawks.”
This urban warfare drill is reminiscent of the Department of Defense drill that concerned residents in Coconut Grove, a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
After midnight, simulated gunfire and explosions would be heard as military helicopters flew over skyscrapers. Local mainstream media reported : “Miami police assisted in overseeing the exercises — but they were instructed to keep quiet about the exercises until late Monday, for security reasons.
The police also blocked off roads around the Grand Bay during the exercise.”
WSVN-TV – In Plainville and Worchester, Massachusetts, surprised citizens witnessed “military helicopters descended on the vacant Wood School [in] the late hours of the night in a scene that might have appeared to simulate the United States’ special forces attack on Osama bin Laden’s compound last year.”
Many locals had their homes swooped down upon by black helicopters in an obvious display of military dominance over the general public.
Residents saw helicopters landing near Worcester Memorial Auditorium in Lincoln Square. Local newspapers were flooded with “telephone calls and e-mails . . . curious about what was happening.”
The local police claim they were unaware of the drills.
A US Army spokeswoman made a half-hearted apology for “any inconvenience or unforeseen disturbance.”
Mainstream media is now reporting that the US Air Force is training with the Russian and Canadian Air Force personnel in “a joint counter-terror exercise . . . simulating a cooperative response to an aircraft hijacked by terrorists in international airspace.”
Being called “Vigilant Eagle” these training exercises are being held on command bases domestically as well as in Russia. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) released a statement admitting that during August 27th – 29th there would be simulated international flights from Alaska to Russia and back again in an effort to “foreign-flagged commercial air carrier on an international flight has been seized by terrorists.”
According to a NORAD statement:
“The aircraft will not respond to communications. The exercise scenario creates a situation that requires both the Russian Air Force and NORAD to launch or divert fighter aircraft to investigate and follow the aircraft. The exercise will focus on the cooperative hand-off of the aircraft between fighter aircraft of the participating nations.”
These exercises involve personnel at NORAD headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colo. and Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Ala., and at two Russian bases in the country’s Far East.
Anonymous sources have been reporting that Russian troops are being spotted in Colorado at Fort Carson base; specifically at gun ranges practicing their marksman skills. The NORAD admission of US and Russian armed forces collaboration substantiates these claims.
Just this month, foreign troops were caught at a Wal-Mart. They were traveling in what were described as “large government vans”.
Moving around in white, unmarked vans, strange troops have been seen purchasing food and water at another Wal-Mart in Franklin, Indiana. Parading in military personnel fatigues where drone activity has been reported in Oklahoma City and black helicopters were spotted hovering over a construction site.
The increased activity across the nation in conjunction with the mounting citizen reports of seeing military on their streets, conducting urban warfare drills, and spotting foreign troops have prompted public interest in the US government’s plans to enact a full-scale martial law in America – expected by the end of this year.

US military plan against China outlined in think-tank report
NSNBC
August 29, 2012
(RT) – As analysts around the world question whether the US is losing its superpower status, China’s influence in the Asia-Pacific region is strengthening. But a new report has set out a strategy for America to increase its military presence in the area.
The paper, entitled “US Force Posture Strategy in the Asia-Pacific Region: An Independent Assessment,” suggests America is preparing for a possible conflict with China, one warship at a time.
The report was written by the Centre for Strategic and Independent Studies (CSIS), a Washington-based think tank. CSIS is a non-government body, but its assessment was commissioned by the US Defense Department.
The assessment provides extensive discussions with top US military personnel throughout the Pentagon’s Pacific Command.
The report was released on June 27, but only gained media coverage after its main authors – David Berteau and Michael Green – testified before the US House Armed Services Committee on August 1.
The report says the “geostrategic uncertainty the United States and its allies and partners face in the Asia Pacific region is how China’s growing power and influence will impact order and stability in the years ahead.”
The CSIS report approves of the repositioning and strengthening of US military forces on Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, which are strategically located in the Western Pacific. It also supports the stationing of combat ships in Singapore, which will be capable of intelligence gathering, special operations, and landing troops with armored vehicles.
The paper confirms that the US has held talks with Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam over possible access to military bases.
But it doesn’t stop there. Recommendations to prevent China’s reemergence as a great power go on and on.
The authors suggest placing a US nuclear aircraft carrier in Australia, doubling the number of nuclear attack submarines based in Guam, deploying combat ships to South Korea, and upgrading anti-missile defenses in Japan, South Korea, and Guam.
The report also suggests permanently basing a bomber squadron on Guam as well as boosting both manned and unmanned surveillance in the region. Moreover, it promotes boosting US army ground presence, including stationing 2,500 more marines in Australia.
The recommendations coincide with the Obama administration’s “Asia Pivot.” It’s a plan to boost US military presence throughout the Asia-Pacific Region, and to back almost all of China’s rivals whilst doing so.
And the government has most certainly accomplished its goal. Just last week, the Pentagon announced it would conduct surveillance drone missiles over a Pacific island chain which have become a point of tension between China and Japan – who the US has deep military ties to.
Washington has also been a firm supporter of the Philippines during its ongoing dispute with China in the South China Sea since April, when a standoff began over ownership of the Scarborough Reef.
Since the disagreement kicked off, Washington has stepped up its military presence in the region. The move angered Beijing, which claims the presence of US naval ships hinders vital shipping lanes which China relies on for energy and raw materials.
If America makes the report’s suggestions a reality, the decision could have far-reaching implications for Washington’s allies, making them vulnerable to attacks in the future.
And if the US aims to strengthen its ties with Asia-Pacific countries in order to squash China, the question remains whether those island nations will actually comply.
