The Printable Firearm Revolution is Closer Than You Think [video included]

The right to bear arms is undeniably explicit in the constitution, but what about the right to produce your own arms?

Cody Wilson

That question will inevitably come about following the somewhat recent innovation of 3D printing, and a group’s announcement it wants to distribute plans allowing you to create firearms in your own home.

3D printing is exactly what it sounds like. You can literally “print” physical 3D objects by scanning whatever you want replicated. A 3D printer can work like a copier, but it can also interpret 3D CAD data files to create just about anything.

Earlier this week, an online fund-raising campaign created by University of Texas law student Cody Wilson and a group of friends reached its goal of collecting $20,000 to fund an operation known as the Wiki Weapon Project.

Wilson described the project in a video posted to You Tube in July, stating, “So consider this, a CAD file containing the information for a 3D printable weapon system. If that file was seeded by 30 people, let’s say, as long as there’s a free Internet, that file is available to anyone at any time, all over the world. A gun can be anywhere. Any bullet is now a weapon.”

Under the name Defense Distributed, the group set up an Indiegogo account to accept contributions, however their account was shut down for violating the terms of service. Forbes detailed the manner in which Indiegogo terminated the account:

About a month after the Wiki Weapon project’s launch, Indiegogo sent Defense Distributed an email saying its funds had been frozen due to “unusual account activity,” and followed up with an explanation that it had violated Indiegogo’s terms of service, which don’t allow the sale of “ammunition, firearms, or certain firearm parts or accessories.”

Although Wilson says they weren’t selling any of those items, they didn’t allow the setback to derail their efforts. They opened another donation account on their personal website and have since raised the money needed to rent a 3D printer and further advance their vision. According to Forbes, they’ll also hold a gun design contest to review different firearm designs.

Even though some of their donations came from gun enthusiasts and constitution-upholding patriots, Wilson says the group isn’t just doing it to arm the masses: “It’s more the liberation of information. It’s about living in a world where you just download the file for the thing you want to make in this life.”

Printers, like the RepRap, will have the capability of producing their own replacement parts, thus creating self-sustaining units and opening the door for mass production of endless 3D printers.

The group is sure to face other hurdles in their pursuit of information distribution.

Undeniably, an armed population would lead to safer homes and businesses, effectively reducing police roles to little more than parking and traffic ticket distributors. The project’s success would also murder profits for firearms manufacturers, and might be seen as unfair competition.

Wilson, however, maintains an optimistic view of the precedent their ideas could set: “As the printing press kind of revolutionized literacy, 3D printing is in its moment.”

Study Confirms BPA is Making You Fat, Fueling Obesity

overweightman 235x147 Study Confirms BPA is Making You Fat, Fueling ObesityIf you  know about bisphenol-a (BPA), the estrogen-mimicking chemical found in plastics and other produce, then you probably know it isn’t safe. Well, a study out of NYU School of Medicine links BPA to obesity. The study involved analyzing surveys from 2,938 young people, and is another of a long list of studies coming to the same conclusions.

While taking important factors like the children’s race, age, gender, family income and education, activity level, and calorie intake into consideration, the researchers found that obese children made up 22 percent of individuals with the highest BPA levels in their urine. Of those with the lowest BPA levels, however, obese children represented only 10 percent.

Similar Results in Adults

“It’s a credible study and it has to be given some attention,” says Phil Landrigan, director of Children’s Environmental Health Center at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

This is far from the first examination of the link between bisphenol-A (BPA) and obesity. Last year, a similar study was conducted also using CDC data to examine BPA levels and obesity among American adults. Results were similar to the study of children, although it should be noted that obese white children—black and Hispanic children less so—showed the most definitive link to BPA.

A Closer Look at Obesity and BPA

NYU’s Leonardo Trasande adds that obese children may store more BPA in their fat than do others. He adds that obese children also likely consume more BPA through canned foods and drinks, like soda. (We should remember, however, that the hormone-mimicking chemical is nearly ubiquitous, and 92 percent of Americans over age 6 carry detectable levels in their blood.) You can get BPA and the equally (if not more) dangerous sister chemical BPS exposure from any number of things, including:

  • Plastic water bottles
  • The inner lining of canned foods
  • Paper money
  • BPA-free receipts

America’s obesity rates have been rising for three decades. Today, over two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and one-third is obese. “Are we programming people to fail?” Linda Birnbaum, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences asks. “That’s the question we need to ask, instead of blaming people.”

There are numerous studies confirming that BPA and BPS are harmful chemicals linked to numerous conditions including diabetes and breast cancer. There’s a reason Canada has already banned BPA as toxic, and the Food and Drug Administration finally banned BPA in baby bottles nationwide. America—especially consider recent debates over healthcare and personal responsibility—should not be the last to see it banned from its goods.

Chemwebs Reaction – 18/09/2012 – 720p [video]

[Potent News Editor’s note: This is one of the video responses to Potent News Blast #2.]

First take at filming some of those “chemwebs”.
More to come, with steadier, better framed shots and a good macro lens too.

The sample comes from my home (inside !),
I’m not a scientist, i don’t know what this is, but i advise the skeptics to look into dusty corners in their homes and to test by themselves.

The white hair on which it is sticked is not webs, the upper part is.
You can easily tell because webs are messier in appearance.

——————————————————————————–

Power Company to Customer: Smart Meter or No Power at All [video included]

Nevada Energy Sends Three Armed Men to Disconnect Woman’s Power After She ‘Opts Out’

theintelhub.com
September 16, 2012

Press Release from StopSmartMeters.org

LAS VEGAS- A woman living near Las Vegas has been living without power for more than a month because the electric utility, Nevada Energy, refuses to give its customers the choice to retain an analog style electrical meter.

Mona Orkoulas lives in the mountains outside Las Vegas, Nevada.

For years Mona worked on humanitarian projects in the Middle East: drilling wells, and providing drinkable water and renewable power to remote villages.

Now, it turns out that she may need some humanitarian assistance herself- right here in the USA.

The story begins when Nevada Energy (NVE) installed a ‘smart’ meter on Mona’s bedroom wall in January without permission, or even so much as a few days’ notice.  Mona reports that she does not have any prior history of medical issues.

Shortly after NV Energy installed the smart meter, she started experiencing a range of adverse symptoms including headaches and tinnitus. A letter from Mona’s doctor to NV Energy reads:

“Neurological and cardiological findings may be associated with pulsed EMF… I recommend that this patient be allowed to have NVE reinstall an analog meter at her house.”

Mona called the power company, expecting that they would at least send someone out.  Months later, frustrated after at least six failed attempts to have NVE address the problem, Mona finally purchased a standard analog meter and had an electrician install it at her residence.

She carefully photographed and recorded the readings on the old and new meter, to be sure that she paid for every kilowatt-hour used.

On August 6th, 2012 at about 10:30am, three men from Nevada Energy, armed with guns, arrived unannounced on her property, removed the analog meter from the socket, took both meters, and left her living without electricity.

Mona was in tears, visibly shaken by the encounter, and recalls asking the men, “Why are you on my property with guns?” Their response: “this is procedure Ma’am.”  More than a month later, the lights are still off and Mona hasn’t budged.  “They’re not putting that thing back on my house,” she says.

According to Angel de Fazio, of Nevada Stop Smart Meters! who has been on the front lines working to fight NVE’s smart meter program, “Nevada residents only won the right to be placed on the ‘delay list’, not a full ‘opt out’.”

In other words, NVE has a ‘delay list’ you can sign to ‘delay’ your installation date.  But if the power company managed to sneak on your property and install a smart meter- even without permission- then your choice is a smart meter or no power at all, as Mona discovered.  Even if you have a letter from your doctor.

Now NVE is accusing Mona of tampering with their equipment, which she says is ridiculous, because she gave them plenty of opportunity to remove the problematic smart meter.

“I had no intention of stealing electricity,” she says.  “I just wanted the grinding noise and headaches to stop.”

California Penal code defines “tampering” as: “(carrying out)(1) specified acts with the intent to obtain utility services without paying the full charge.” Nevada laws are similar.

For the last month, Mona has been ‘camping’ in her house, unable to use her appliances, lights or hot water.

The laundry that was in the washing machine when they cut her power was locked in, and by the time she could get it out it was totally destroyed by mildew.

The NVE agents came without warning. The power cut has had a devastating effect on her life, she says.

“My business has taken a nosedive since I have had to travel into town to access my e-mails.  My computer, fax machine, and printer don’t work. I’m cooking over a camp stove in my living room.”

Mona says “Some of us eat organic foods, buy our nice bottled waters, exercise daily, but where is the point in all of this wellness when we are forced to have a radiation box attached to our homes?”
