An estimated 10,000 people might have been killed in the central Philippine province of Leyte alone, which was almost completely destroyed by the powerful typhoon Haiyan, local authorities said.
The typhoon has devastated up to 80 percent of the Leyte province area as it ripped through the Philippines, Chief Superintendent Elmer Soria told Reuters.
“We had a meeting last night with the governor and other officials. The governor said based on their estimate, 10,000 died,” Soria said.
Most of the dead drowned or were killed by collapsed buildings, authorities say. Tacloban city administrator Tecson Lim told AP that the death toll in Leyte province city alone “could go up to 10,000.”
Police have been deployed to patrol the ruins of Tacloban to prevent looting as desperate residents look for food and water, said Philippine Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, describing the situation as “horrific.”
“The dead are on the streets, they are in their houses, they are under the debris, they are everywhere,” said Lim, adding that only about 400 bodies have been recovered so far.
The Red Cross said earlier that 1,200 people we confirmed dead in the Philippines.
Roxas said earlier on Saturday that it was too soon to announce any final figures.

With the recent very real scare surrounding the Fukushima disaster, the BP oil spill that created a dead-zone in the Gulf of Mexico the size of a small town, and an ongoing disregard for our oceans, one of the most important natural medicines we have on this planet is being depleted – spirulina.
We say stuff like this a lot, but deep sea spirulina is one of the most nutrient dense, disease-fighting foods we have access to. It is an incredible immune booster, it reduce the chance of dementia and other memory-loss diseases, and it reduces oxidative stress in the body which can cause cancer, heart disease and even diabetes. Spirulina also prevents the damage of human epithelial cells in the intestines, and reduces the environmentally-triggered carcinogenic effects on our bodies. It has effectively reduced or stopped cancers in the head, neck and intestines of human beings, and reduces our overall toxicity tremendously.
Sadly, the radiation toxicity and petroleum by-products – both of corrupt energy corporations – being dumped into our oceans means finding clean spirulina is getting more difficult. Much of spirulina is also full of pesticides due to their prolific use in agriculture, and not at all organic.

U.S. Air Force official Steve Mayer is bothered by California’s refusal to inherit the radioactive waste dump he’s building outside Sacramento, he doesn’t show it.
He’s plowing ahead with plans at the old McClellan Air Force Base to entomb soil contaminated with radium-226, a glow-in-the-dark substance that can cause cancer, and pass ownership of it to the city of Sacramento.
The California Department of Public Health has made it clear that state laws don’t permit the move. Even if they did, Sacramento’s city manager says he wants nothing to do with the dump.
But Mayer’s playing the long game. By 2019, when the military wants to hand over the arena-sized dump to the city, he’s hoping he won’t have to deal with the current crop of state regulators and city officials balking at his plans.

Motorola, now owned by Google, has applied for a patent for technology that seems like complete science fiction: an electronic tattoo to be placed on a person’s neck that acts as a “mobile microphone, lie detector and digital display.”
This makes Motorola’s stomach acid-powered tablet that turns your body into a living password seem like the equivalent of a floppy disk. When Motorola announced the password pill, they also announced a more rudimentary electronic tattoo.
Australian news outlet The Age reports that the electronic tattoo would eliminate background noise that can disturb phone conversations by capturing vibrations or sound directly from the user’s throat.
The tattoo would have its own power supply built-in and would transmit the sound through Bluetooth, near-field communication (NFC) or ZigBee.
The patent, filed in 2012 but published on Thursday, states that the tattoo could also be used as a lie detector, according to the patent. The tattoo would measure the electrical conductance of the skin, known as the “galvanic skin response.”
The galvanic skin response is used to indicate psychological or physiological arousal because both are linked to skin moisture, which causes a variation in electrical conductance.
