The Eyeopener with James Corbett

It has long been acknowledged that the Saudis have been one of the key players funding, arming, training and smuggling terrorists into Syria during the conflict. A February 2012 report from the BBC alleged that Saudi Arabia was one of the key states bankrolling the Syrian jihadis. An October 2012 follow-up confirmed Saudi weapons were being used by the so-called rebels. In February of this year, the Saudi ambassador to Jordan, Fahad bin Abdul Mohsen al-Zaid, admitted that Saudis were involved in arming and training terrorist groups in Syria. But the Saudi connection to the fighting in Syria took on a new dimension in the wake of last month’s chemical attack on Ghouta. The Saudis are now being blamed for supplying the chemical weapons that the rebels used in the attack. In one key report, veteran AP correspondent Dale Gavlak and on-the-ground reporter Yahyah Ababneh interviewed rebels in Ghouta who alleged that the weapons had been supplied by Prince Bandar bin Sultan, the Saudi intelligence chief.

Canadian Government Funding Syrian Rebels Propaganda

As the possibility of a military strike against Syria looms, some details of Canada’s supporting role in the conflict have emerged.

Canada has given $5.3-million to the Syrian opposition to support the rebels in anti-government propaganda since April 2012, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAIT).

Canadian funding has helped Syrian rebels establish a pirate radio network and training for journalists and bloggers “in an effort to rapidly increase international credibility of the Syrian opposition and visibility of humanitarian news reporting from Syria,” the government says.

Canada contributed $650,000 toward helping the Syrian Justice and Accountability Centre establish a secure database as part of a program to help support “research and collect evidence of human rights violations for use in future Syria-led transitional justice processes.”

Providing communications equipment has been a priority for the government.

Canada has also provided pre-paid airtime for satellite Internet communication devices with the goal of “increasing co-ordination between opposition networks of local civilian actors involved in local administration and political leadership, during both the conflict and transition phases in Syria,” according to the DFAIT.

In a joint project with the U.S. State Department and the U.K., Canada has contributed to an opposition-controlled media apparatus that produces content for broadcast and print.

The Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives has devised training programs specializing in journalism, activism and leadership, conflict-resolution and community development, to which the government has given $237,000.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird have been firm that Canada’s role in any military action in Syria will be entirely symbolic.

Our tax dollars are funding psychological warfare programs, without our knowledge or consent. Very similar to this:

[Potent News editor’s note: There definitely is unrest on the ground in Syria but the antagonists are the western powers and those they fund and arm for the purpose of invading Syria.  My intention in posting this article/videos is not to say all the violence is fake, to be clear, but I simply wish to point out that the west is fueling the fire in these shameful ways.]

I would suggest that you let your MP and anyone else know how you feel about that!

U.S. strike on Syria will deal blow to intl security – Russian senator

MOSCOW: A missile strike against Syria without the UN Security Council’s go-ahead would be tantamount to a declaration of war against Damascus and a blow to international security and the world order, said chairman of the Federation Council’s Defense and Security Committee Viktor Ozerov.

“If we recognize the supremacy of international law and the sovereignty of UN member-states, the start of a U.S. military action against Syria bypassing the UN Security Council could only mean one thing: another American aggression against an Arab state torn apart by civil war,” Ozerov told Interfax-AVN on Tuesday.

It would also deal a blow against the world order, on international law and on the nonproliferation principles which Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Obama will trample underfoot if he launches a military action, Ozerov also said.

“The aftermath of U.S. aggressive operations are still fresh in our memory: Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya…The list could be extended. No arguments can be accepted here in defense of democracy or human rights. What is really happening is that Washington cannot agree that countries exist that do not want to dance to its tune or play by its rules,” the Russian senator said.

“The political-diplomatic plan for settling the Syrian crisis remains on the negotiating table due to efforts being made by Russia, China and sober-minded Western politicians and lawmakers. How long will it remain there? I pin much hope on parliamentary diplomacy, which will play a certain if not decisive role in easing tensions surrounding Syria,” Ozerov said.

The upcoming meeting in Washington between Russian lawmakers and American congressmen on the initiative of both houses of the Russian parliament will hopefully become one more argument in favor of a peaceful settlement of the crisis in Syria, he said.
