Could the downing of a Turkish jet by Syrian anti-air defenses lead to Article Five invocation? [video included]

A Turkish F4, the same type of fighter jet shot down by Syrian anti-aircraft systems

The West has tried to push several incidents to justify a foreign intervention in Syria, with the most recent being the alleged Houla massacre which quickly fell apart thanks in part to the BBC using an image from Iraq in an attempt to make readers emotionally react to the incident.

Thankfully, even mainstream media outlets around the world have begun to take notice (see below video) of the lies and misrepresentations that have been the hallmark of the tragic situation in Syria for well over a year now.

Also noteworthy have been the attempts to drudge up Iraq-style chemical weapons claims – which are devoid of any factual basis and nothing but pure, unadulterated propaganda – in order to build popular support for an attack on Syria.

It seems that none of these attempts have worked, but the latest incident might provide the justification that the West has been searching for.

Previously I wrote about how Turkey could invoke Article Five of the North Atlantic Treaty, pulling all of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) into a full-scale attack on Syria.

Thankfully, that never materialized. However, the statements made by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding the downing of a Turkish fighter jet might do just that.

Erdogan stated that the Turkish fighter jet which was reported missing in the region around the Eastern Mediterranean early Friday was actually shot down by Syria, which was later confirmed by Syrian state media outlet SANA according to The Hindu.

Prime Minister Erdogan made this formal allegation after conducting a joint search and rescue operation with Syria.

“It has been understood that our plane has been struck down by Syria,” Prime Minister Erdogan claimed in a written statement issued after an emergency meeting was held with the top figures of the military and government.

“Turkey will announce its final position and take necessary steps with determination after the incident is entirely clarified,” Erdogan further stated without clarifying on any retaliatory measures Turkey might take.

According to a Turkish military statement issued early Friday, the fighter jet lost radio contact with its base somewhere over the Eastern Mediterranean near the Syrian city of Latakia.

SANA reported that the military identified an “unidentified aerial target” flying at high speed and low altitude.

“The Syrian anti-air defenses counteracted with anti-aircraft artillery, hitting it directly,” SANA said. “The target turned out to be a Turkish military plane that entered Syrian airspace and was dealt with according to laws observed in such cases.”

In other words, the Turkish fighter jet breached sovereign Syrian airspace and they reacted like any country under siege would.

With the two pilots of the Turkish jet still missing, the official statement from Turkey stated that they “will determinedly take necessary steps” in response to the Syrian action.

According to The Hindu, some Turkish television reports indicated that the plane was on a reconnaissance flight, while the Turkish military has not provided any details on the jet’s mission.

While Syrian vessels chose to help in the search and rescue mission, they did state that the jet violated the airspace above their territorial waters and that they fired upon the jet before realizing it was Turkish.

Laughably, one commentator, Ilter Turan, a professor of political science at Istanbul’s Bilgi University, claimed that the action was clearly “hostile” even if the jet actually violated Syrian airspace.

“They could have either sent their planes to confront it or force it to land, it is a hostile act by any standard,” Turan claimed.

However, this ignores the fact that Syria feels, understandably I might add, that they might be attacked at any time by surrounding nations or Western forces.

Turan predicted – accurately, in my opinion – that Syria would actually avoid escalating tensions with Turkey.

This is likely since Turkey could quite easily invoke Article Five and thus bring the wrath of NATO, which has had an itchy trigger finger since the destruction of Libya, upon the entire nation of Syria.

Only time will tell but hopefully we will not see any more bloodshed and yet another brutal NATO invasion in the Middle East, or anywhere for that matter.

June 24, 2012

Heavy fighting and US assassination drone strikes have forced many Yemenis to move across the south from the Abyan province to the port city of Aden, Press TV reports.

“The US assassination drone strikes came and destroyed many homes, killing many people inside those homes throughout the province of Abyan. It is enough. We call on the US to stop interfering,” one refugee told Press TV.

Some of the refugees, who have been living in an abandoned old school for a year now, complained about tough living conditions.

U.S. Remains In Gulf With Tens Of Thousands Of Troops

US clings onto Gulf with tens of thousands of troops in region

====

The build-up of the American contingent in the region is a direct result of Washington withdrawing troops from Iraq in December 2011. The troops and military vehicles did not actually go far: many simply crossed the border with Kuwait and added to the population of the three US bases that serve as logistical hubs, training ranges, and which provide support for regional operations. Besides, the territory of Kuwait is securely covered by Patriot missile batteries stationed there, a vital element of missile defense to be developed in the region, as promised by the US to its allies.

====

The latest US Senate Foreign Relations Committee report suggests the US will seek to maintain its position as the only superior military power in the Arabian Peninsula and Persian Gulf region for the time being.

Despite the troop withdrawal from Iraq, the American military presence in the area is set to expand.

The seven-point report suggests that working in close cooperation with GCC (Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf) states, the US intends to maintain military bases or presence in practically all of those countries, namely Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

Americans call this strategy a “lily pad” model. The US military bases scattered here and there enable the US military command to hold the territory under full control, allowing it to increase military presence in chosen locations at any given time.

In Kuwait alone, where the US has three bases, there are 15,000 troops stationed, including a couple of brigade combat teams and a combat aviation brigade.

Overall in the region there are reportedly 40,000 American servicemen ready for action.

If one divides the Persian Gulf lengthwise, it becomes clear that one shore is under tight Washington control, with troops stationed in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Despite the fact that the United States withdrew most troops from Saudi Arabia in 2003, the country remains the biggest American arms buyer. Some 3,000 servicemen of the 64th Air Expeditionary Group are still stationed about 20 km southeast of the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh.

====

Seven principles of US military policy in the Persian Gulf:

1. The US ensures a “security umbrella” to its Arab allies.
2. The US remains a central part of the Gulf security framework.
3. The US increases trade relations with GCC states to promote economic reform and diversification.
4. The US preserves the “lily pad” model of military bases throughout the Gulf region, which permits the rapid escalation of military force in case of emergency.
5. The US uses the GCC partners’ capabilities in select defensive missions, though keeping its role as a security guarantor.
6. The US provides the Gulf partners with security assistance, supports a comprehensive strategy for regional arms sales and ensures a stable security architecture.
7. The US should promote the gradual political reintegration of Iraq into the Arab fold.

====

The other side of the Gulf belongs to a nation that actually gave its ancient name to it – Iran. Since Iran and its nuclear program remain a major stumbling block in international politics, the correct answer to the question “why does Washington need so many combat-ready troops in the Persian Gulf” is Iran. There is simply no other nation in the region that might pose a threat to Washington’s interests in the Middle East.

The Gulf Security Architecture: Partnership with the Gulf Cooperation Council report prepared by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee again stresses the political and economic importance of the region for the US and outlines seven principles for the US military to provide security in the Persian Gulf region.

The US continues to expand its combat-capable presence in the unstable region of the Middle East despite a declared shift of interests to the Asia-Pacific region. Heavy financing of the American contingent in the Gulf region is called to stress that America has not forgotten its Arab allies and that Washington intends to play a military superpower role in the foreseeable future.

Will Russian And Chinese Military Forces On Syrian Soil Prevent Obama From Bombing Syria?

by Michael Snyder, Contributor
Activist Post
June 20, 2012

Everyone knows that the Obama administration has been steadily gearing up for a military campaign against Syria. Everyone also knows that Russia and China do not want to see this happen. Now Russia and China are sending military forces to Syria.

It is being reported that Russia, China, Iran and Syria will be conducting the “Middle East’s largest ever military exercise” next month.Apparently tens of thousands of troops will be involved. This will be the first time that the Russians and the Chinese have jointly deployed large numbers of troops in Syria.

Will this show of military power be enough to prevent Barack Obama from bombing Syria? Or will Obama go ahead anyway and risk ruining relations with the Russians and the Chinese? Tensions are rising in the Middle East and the region is a powder keg that could erupt at any time. If someone makes the wrong move we could end up with World War III.

A number of sources have reported that the Obama administration has been contemplating a military campaign in Syria similar to what happened in Libya. The U.S. would institute a no-fly zone, bomb the Syrian government and the Syrian military, and provide heavy military hardware for the rebel forces on the ground.

According to a recent Debka report, the plans for such a campaign in Syria are close to being finalized….

As the violence in Syria continued to go from bad to worse in scope and intensity, US official sources had this to say Saturday, June 16, about planned US military operations in the war-torn country:

“The intervention will happen. It is not a question of ‘if’ but ‘when.’”

A Syrian Free Army rebel delegation is now in Washington to talk about their requestsfor heavy weapons from the Obama administration. In their meetings with US Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford and the State Department’s expert on Syria Fred Hof, the rebel leaders handed in two lists for approval: types of heavy weapons capable of challenging Bashar Assad’s armed forces and selected targets of attack to destabilize his regime.

Debkafile’s Washington sources disclose that the administration is very near a decision on the types of weapons to be shipped to the Syrian rebels and when. Most of the items Washington is ready to send have been purchased by Saudi Arabia and Qatar and are ready for shipment.

The White House is also close to deciding on the format of its military operation in Syria. Some sources are defining it as “Libya lite” – that is, a reduced-scale version of the no-fly zone imposed on Libya two years ago and the direct air and other strikes which toppled the Qaddafi regime.

What the Obama administration fails to grasp is that Syria is not Libya.

Syria has a lot more friends, and any attack on Syria would almost certainly cause a wider Middle East war to erupt.

For Russia and China, Syria is a red line that must not be crossed.

Now Russia and China are sending substantial military forces to Syria for “war games”. Obviously this is just an excuse to get troops into Syria. The following description of these upcoming “war games” is from a recent article in the Jerusalem Post….

According to ShamLife, China had gained Egyptian approval to allow 12 Chinese ships carrying military equipment to pass through the Suez Canal, and that these vessels would reach the Syrian ports of Tartous and Latakia in two weeks’ time.

ShamLife said Syrian air defense missiles and its coastal defense would be put to the test in the military exercises, and that 90,000 troops from the four countries would be involved in the war games along with 400 aircraft and 1,000 tanks and “hundreds of rockets.”

The exercises would be carried out after Syrian troops had ‘cleansed’ several cities where ‘armed groups’ – meaning Syrian opposition forces fighting against government troops loyal to President Bashar Assad – were gathering.

It is also being reported that the Russians are sending warships from the Black Sea Fleet to the Syrian coast to protect the Russian military base at Tartus.

The following is from a recent Los Angeles Times article….

Russia is preparing to dispatch a pair of warships carrying a contingent of Black Sea Fleet marines to its logistics base in the Syrian port of Tartus, the Russian Interfax news agency reported Monday, in what appeared to be another sign of the deteriorating security situation in the strife-ridden nation.

The report quoted an unidentified Russian naval source saying the amphibious ships Nikolay Filchenkov and Tsezar Kunikov, accompanied by the rescue tug SB-15, were ‘preparing for a non-routine departure’ for Tartus, Russia’s only Mediterranean base.

In addition, according to a recent article in the Telegraph, a Russian ship that was apparently taking attack helicopters to Syria has been stopped off the coast of Scotland….

A Russian ship believed to be carrying helicopters and missiles for Syria has been effectively stopped in its tracks off the coast of Scotland after its insurance was cancelled at the behest of the British government.

Obviously the Russians and the Chinese are trying to stop an attack on Syria.

Things are getting very tense, and that is not going to change any time soon.

Just check out how a recent CBS News report described a private meeting between Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 summit in Mexico….

The two men barely looked at each other. You could just feel, sort of, the tension between them. And the body language really represented how far apart the two leaders remain on the issue of Syria.

Needless to say, it was not a pleasant conversation. In fact, Putin reportedly wasvery direct with Obama….

Apparently President Obama got a bit of a lecture from Putin about some other failed transitions that are going on around the world.

When Barack Obama was elected, many Americans expected him to keep his campaign promises and greatly reduce U.S. military action around the globe.

Instead, Obama has actually greatly expanded U.S. military action around the globe.

It isn’t reported on much in the mainstream media, but the U.S. military is actually at war in Yemen, in Somalia, in Pakistan, and in a whole bunch of other countries all over the planet.

The following is from a must-read Wired article that just came out….

The center of the US drone war has shifted to Yemen, where 23 American strikes have killed an estimated 155 people so far this year. But you wouldn’t know about it — or about the cruise missile attacks, or about the US commando teams in Yemen — by reading the report the White House sent to Congress about US military activities around the globe. Instead, there’s only the blandest acknowledgement of ‘direct action’ in Yemen, ‘against a limited number of [al-Qaida] operatives and senior leaders.’

The report, issued late Friday, is the first time the United States has publicly, officially acknowledged the operations in Yemen and in nearby Somalia that anyone with internet access could’ve told you about years ago. But the report doesn’t just fail to admit the extent of the shadow war that America is waging in the region. It’s borderline legal — at best. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 requires the president to inform Congress about any armed conflicts America is engaged in. Friday’s report isn’t just uninformative about Yemen. It doesn’t even mention the US campaign in Pakistan, even though the Defense Secretary says America is ‘at war‘ there.

Obama has shown contempt for Congress on so many levels. Not only does he not ask them when he starts a new war, he barely even informs them of what is going on.

In the past, Russia and China kind of stood aside as the U.S. imposed its will all over the Middle East, but that is no longer the case.

Russia and China are clearly saying “no” to military action against Syria.

Will Obama back down or will he defy the Russians and the Chinese?

It is going to be very interesting to watch.

And this emerging alliance between the Russians and the Chinese is going to be something to keep a close eye on. We have been seeing increasing cooperation between the two nations in a bunch of different areas.

If the United States is not very careful, it could find itself in a direct conflict with both Russia and China in the years ahead.

The Russian military and the Chinese military have been very busy preparing for such a conflict. The U.S. military has been focused on other things.

Sadly, most Americans know much more about “America’s Got Talent” and “American Idol” than they do about geopolitics these days.

MMR causes autism, proven in Italian court case

by D. Holt
Natural News
June 22, 2012

(NaturalNews) For many years the stories from devastated parents have been eerily similar. A young, bright child vaccinated with MMR, has minor side effects such as high temperature and being off food, and then develops the debilitating disability of autism.

Whilst the mainstream medical profession deny the link between autism and the triple shot of measles, mumps and rubella, there have been many who have argued to the contrary. Statistics show the increases in autism correlate alarmingly with the introduction and uptake of the MMR vaccine. And Now in an Italian court, there has been a landmark ruling for a child whose parents claim that his autism was triggered by MMR.

The parents of Valentino Bocca have been awarded 112,000 Euro to be paid by the Italian ministry of health. They are now seeking a further 800,000 Euro in a civil case. The story is a tragic one, Valentino, developing normally, was given the shot at 14 months and started to suffer from diarrhea, lost interest in food and within a few days lost the ability to use his spoon. Worse was soon to come when he began to be restless at night, screaming in pain for hours. It was later found that he was suffering from a painful bowel condition that is common in autistic children. With an adjusted diet of no wheat or milk, he was able to sleep but the autism symptoms continued, and even at the age of nine, he still does not speak.

The case featured three expert witnesses that concurred that “barring preexisting conditions there was a reasonable scientific probability that the MMR jab had triggered Valantino’s condition.” Judge Lucio Ardigo agreed that it was “conclusively established” that Valentino had suffered from an “autistic disorder associated with medium cognitive delay” and his illness, was linked to receiving the shot. The Italian shot has the same ingredients as the one used in the UK and US.

Proof in court of the link between MMR and autism, but will this be denied by the UK and US?

In the US over 5000 families are known to the mainstream media as believing that the MMR shot has triggered autism in their children, and the real figure could be much higher. Court rulings against the MMR include a 90,000 GBP (Great British Pound) payout for brain damage to a boy called Robert Fletcher, and a $1.5 million payout for Hannah Poling who received MMR and six other vaccinations in one day and then developed autism.

It is small comfort to the families of children who have suffered autism as a result of these vaccines, that there may be a flicker of light at the end of the tunnel. However, the common belief amongst the established medical profession is that it is better to vaccinate a child than not. The forceful way in which the government in both the US and Europe have pushed for vaccination with MMR, has left many parents believing they have no choice, despite the shot being voluntary. In the case of Valentino Bocca this pro-vaccine propaganda was detrimental to the government’s case.

With this ruling, there is now a legal precedent in Italy that could cause an opening in the floodgates. Many parents will be looking to obtain their rightful compensation against the governments that have conspired in one of the greatest medical cover-ups of all time. A cover-up that has cost careers, the suffering of children and the lives of their parents.
