Hugo Chavez Dies, Vice President Alludes to a “Scientific Attack” on Chavez, US Embassy Officials Expelled over Alleged Coup Plot

Venezuelan media today announced that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has died.
At approximately 5.30pm local time on March 5, Vice-President Nicolas Maduro addressed the nation, stating that after nearly three months of treatment in Cuba and Venezuela, Chavez passed away in the Dr. Carlos Arvelo military hospital in Caracas.

Hugo Chavez speaking to hundreds of thousands of supporters of the Bolivarian revolution at an election rally in Caracas, October 3, four days before he was re-elected president for the fifth time.
“Those who die for life, can’t be called dead,” he stated, after announcing that the president has lost his two year battle with cancer.
Hugo Chavez, who was 58-years-old, was re-elected president in October (for the fifth time since 1998) on a platform of deepening the popular and democratic socialist revolution his government has been leading. The Bolivarian revolution has greatly reduced poverty, nationalised strategic industries and promoted a range of new forms of participatory democracy.
However, in December Chavez returned to Cuba for fresh treatment on cancer, raising fears his health problems had drastically worsened. Chavez endorsed Vice-President Nicolas Maduro as the candidate for the Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), if new elections were required due to his health problems.
As late as last week, the government was maintaining that Chavez was improving in Caracas, after returning to Venezuela in the early hours of February 18.
Yesterday, the government released an official statement indicating that the chemotherapy has left Chavez in a “very delicate” state.
“From today, there has been deterioration in his respiratory performance, related to the immunodeficiency of his current clinical condition. At present he is suffering from a new and serious respiratory infection.”
Then earlier on March 5, Maduro alluded to possibly US involvement in a “scientific attack” on the president. Pointing to evidence produced after the death of Yasar Arafat that the Palestinian leader had been poisoned, Maduro said: “Eventually there will be a scientific investigation into President Chavez’s illness.”
On March 5, before Chavez passed away, two US officials were expelled for allegedly contacting members of the Venezuelan military for the purposes of launching “conspiracy plans”.
The Bolivarian Guard and police have been deployed on the streets of major towns and cities to maintain the peace. As the news of Chavez’s death spread, people across the country began gathering at major plazas. More reporting on the response of the Venezuelan people is to come. [Green Left will be running much more commentary on the life of one of the most important revolutionaries of the 21st century so far, who raised the banner of “socialism for the 21st century”, as well as wjhat it means for Veneuela’s Bolivarian revolution.]

US sees ‘biggest-ever’ climate protest over Keystone XL pipeline
End the Lie – Independent News

The march’s organizers, environmental movement 350.org, estimated that 40,000 people from 30 states took part in the ‘Forward on Climate’ rally, described as the biggest climate march in US history; police have not yet provided an official estimate.
Protesters chanted “Keystone pipeline? Shut it down,” as they marched around the White House, calling on President Obama to reject the Keystone proposal and follow through on climate pledges made during his inaugural address.

“For 25 years our government has basically ignored the climate crisis: now people in large numbers are finally demanding they get to work,” 350.org founder Bill McKibben said, according to Reuters.
The climate march comes in response to the latest call from a bipartisan group of senators to finally approve the $5.3-billion project, which has been pending for four-and-a-half years.
The project has been embroiled in ongoing controversy. Supporters in the business community have argued the Keystone XL would create thousands of new jobs, and free the country from energy dependence on South American exporters such as Venezuela. However, environmentalists have expressed concerns over the pollution risks inherent in the controversial tar sands method of oil production.
The first section of the Keystone project, built by Canadian company TransCanada, was approved by the Bush administration and now sees oil transported from Alberta, Canada, to Illinois and Oklahoma.

The remaining sections of the Alberta-to-Texas pipeline have been put on hold following the 2010 BP oil spill, which sparked widespread environmental concerns over the Keystone project, especially the possible damage to sensitive ecological zones in Nebraska.
The Obama administration blocked construction of the Keystone XL pipeline over a year ago. However, the recent approval of an alternative route for the pipeline has increased the chance that the proposal will be given the green light.

BREAKING: Tunisian Opposition Leader Shokri Belaid shot dead. Mass Rallies against Islamist Government expected
nsnbc
February 6, 2013
(nsnbc, RT & agencies) The leader of the Tunisian opposition, Shokri Belaid, who had recently formed an opposition coalition against the Islamist Government under Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali was shot dead in front of his home today. More than 1000 Tunisians are protesting in front of the Interior Ministry, accusing the government for the death of Shokri Belaid, and demanding that the government should fall.
Not yet confirmed eyewitness reports are claiming that live ammunition has been used against protesters. Security forces are cordoning off the area around the Interior Ministry.
Shokri Balaid had recently succeeded at forming a coalition of opposition parties against the government of Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali. The assassination of Shokri Balaid is widely be expected to be a politically motivated murder and an attempt to silence the emerging coalition alliance.
Belaid, the leader of Tunisia´s Democratic Patriotic Party, had recently begun speaking out against alleged attacks by a group of Islamist Enhada mercenaries and Salafists against the parties and opposition activists last Saturday.
The opposition leader was killed as he was leaving his home in Tunisia´s capital Tunis. Belaid was hit by four bullets to his chest and head. Reportedly, Belaid had recently received death threats. The French 24 TV channel reported that three men in a black vehicle had been present at the scene.
A Tunisian political activist known to nsnbc, expressed that the assassination of Belaid may be tied to the recent French pivot in Mali and covert French operations in Algeria and throughout the region.
Tunisia was the first African country where the Arab Spring began manifesting two years ago. The Arab Spring has since been widely recognized as having been socially engineered and co-opted by an alliance of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the Muslim Brotherhood organizations throughout the Middle East and Northern Africa, as well as a cohort of Al Qaeda factions.
Tunisia has, in spite of some protests and some violence been spared for scenes like those which are currently paralyzing Egypt. The assassination of Belaid however, may bring many Tunisian´s frustrations about the co-opted revolution to the surface.
According to latest reports more and more Tunisians are taking into the streets to vent their anger.
