Protesters ordered out of Halifax park Friday under camping ban
Police have arrested several people at the Occupy Nova Scotia site in Halifax as they enforce an eviction order and dismantle tents.
Police teams descended on Victoria Park on Friday afternoon, a couple of hours after demonstrators were told to leave the city park because they were camping illegally.
Fourteen people were arrested as of 4 p.m. AT, all for obstruction of justice, Halifax Regional Police said.
“The time has come for the encampment to end,” Mayor Peter Kelly said in a statement. “Our parks are for all of the public, not an unregulated campground for some.”
About 200 people gathered in the park while protesters also dismantled more than a dozen tents and loaded them into a van headed for a nearby church. One demonstrator said they would regroup at the church and figure out their next move since they’ve been told they can’t return to Grand Parade.
