Nano-Particles in Consumer Products Damage DNA Leading to Cancer

One of the latest trends in manufacturing for today’s consumer products is the use of engineered nano-particles (ENP’s), yet, most people have no idea that they are consuming and absorbing ENP’s. Research is discovering that certain ENP’s may be toxic and extremely harmful to human health, causing cell and DNA damage, potentially leading to the development of cancers.
Nano-particles are microscopically sized particles with at least one dimension less than 100 nano-meters (nm). To put this in perspective, a sheet of paper is about 100,000 nm thick, and a strand of human DNA is about 2.5 nm thick. A current trend in research and development, ENP’s are generating widespread interest for their potential to enhance consumer materials and food products, and for their potential applications in the electronic, optical and biomedical fields. “Nanoparticles are of great scientific interest as they are effectively a bridge between bulk materials and atomic or molecular structures.” [1]
In the market place, nano-particles can be found in sunscreens, toys, clothing, food, drugs, candy, cosmetics, ceramics, paints, and many other common products, and are already a ubiquitous part of our toxic consumer environment. Some food activists have already called attention to the dangers of the commonly used nano-particle titanium dioxide, noting that the “form of the common ‘whitening’ agent known as titanium dioxide is capable of inducing “tumor-like” changes in exposed human cells.” [2]
“Nanotitanium is found in products produced by Jello, Nestlé, M&M’s, Mother’s, Mentos, Albertson’s, Hostess and Kool Aid.” [1]
Previous concerns have largely been focused on cell damage in the human body, however, a new study from MIT and the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) indicates that certain ENP’s may in fact directly damage human DNA, a concern that should have manufacturers and regulators immediately halting the use of nano-particles in consumer products.
“The researchers found that zinc oxide nanoparticles, often used in sunscreen to block ultraviolet rays, significantly damage DNA. Nanoscale silver, which has been added to toys, toothpaste, clothing, and other products for its antimicrobial properties, also produces substantial DNA damage, they found.” [3]
As worldwide cancer rates continue to rise, these results are extremely alarming, especially in light of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recent prediction that human cancer rates will rise a staggering 57% in just the next 20 years. [4]
The MIT And HSPH study zeroed in on just five commonly used nano-particles, shedding some light on how these particles cause disruption and mutations to human DNA:
“The researchers focused on five types of engineered nanoparticles—silver, zinc oxide, iron oxide, cerium oxide, and silicon dioxide (also known as amorphous silica)—that are used industrially. Some of these nanomaterials can produce free radicals called reactive oxygen species, which can alter DNA. Once these particles get into the body, they may accumulate in tissues, causing more damage.” [3]
The study noted that the zinc oxide, used most often in sunscreens, and nano-silver produced the greatest DNA damage:
“…the MIT and HSPH researchers tested the nanoparticles’ effects on two types of cells that are commonly used for toxicity studies: a type of human blood cells called lymphoblastoids, and an immortalized line of Chinese hamster ovary cells.
Zinc oxide and silver produced the greatest DNA damage in both cell lines. At a concentration of 10 micrograms per milliliter—a dose not high enough to kill all of the cells—these generated a large number of single-stranded DNA breaks.
Silicon dioxide, which is commonly added during food and drug production, generated very low levels of DNA damage. Iron oxide and cerium oxide also showed low genotoxicity.” [3]
This study is adds a new dimension to the growing concerns over the use of nano-particles because most prior research has been focused on cell damage, not on the effects that these particles have on DNA.
“Until now, most studies of nanoparticle toxicity have focused on cell survival after exposure. Very few have examined genotoxicity, or the ability to damage DNA—a phenomenon that may not necessarily kill a cell, but one that can lead to cancerous mutations if the damage is not repaired.” [3]
Conclusion
Some researchers, including the author of the MIT/HSPH study paper, are exhibiting concern over the potential of toxic, unregulated nano-particles:
“It’s essential to monitor and evaluate the toxicity or the hazards that these materials may possess. There are so many variations of these materials, in different sizes and shapes, and they’re being incorporated into so many products,” says Christa Watson, a postdoc at HSPH and the paper’s lead author.” [3]
Since nano-particles are already being deployed in many common foods, drugs and products, and we now know that they cause damage to DNA, is simply monitoring and evaluating their toxicity a responsible way to approach this?
Just as with genetically engineered foods, which are already being consumed worldwide, researchers have determined that they can be damaging to human health, yet the status quo for bringing products to market and for removing products from market permits their widespread consumption even in the face of credible research that indicates their dangers.
“According to Tom Philpot, writing for Grist in 2010, ‘As with GMOs, the strategy seems to be: release into the food supply en masse first; assess risks later (if ever).’” [2]

The the drinks tested by LCC contain the substance Taurin, called after the Latin word Taurus. Translated into English it means Bull, which also explains the name of the world leading brand of energy drinks.
Taurin was first isolated from ox bile by Australian scientists Tiedeman and Gmelon in 1827. Taurin is often falsely described as an amino acid, ignoring that it lacks carboxyl. Taurin is found in the livers of bulls, as well as in their semen and urine, which prompts the question where the manufacturers of Red Bull, Monster and other bullish energy drinks are getting their Taurin from.
The DailyBuzz published a leaked video, reportedly from the company that delivers the substance to the drink manufacturers. The video provides the answer, and it’s not from the bulls liver.
The employee who leaked the video paid for his disclosure of the horny bulls and semen extraction for your personal enjoyment in your energy drink with losing his job; reportedly, because he had violated company policy.
Whether these facts matter for you or how much it would matter after the seventh bullish breezer is, of course, an entirely personal issue and a matter of taste. Now that you know what choices you have, you can make up your own mind.

Can caffeine really affect your memory?

(NaturalNews) Caffeine is a psychoactive drug that is widely used on a daily basis. We know of caffeine as a brain stimulant and consume it to stay active and wakeful. However, lesser known effects of caffeine on memory and cognition have confounded researchers for years. New research has disclosed some interesting and previously unknown influences of caffeine on the human brain.
A study published in journal Nature Neuroscience (Feb, 2014) demonstrated a fascinating effect of caffeine on long-term human memory. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University and the University of California, Irvine, conducted a study to investigate the effects of caffeine administration on human learning by taking an uncommon approach. Caffeine was given to the subjects “after” their learning exercise in a double-blind study involving caffeine-naive subjects. Participants were asked to memorize images and then administered with caffeine; salivary samples were collected to analyze for caffeine metabolized products. The subjects were tested for memory performance after 24 hours and were asked to evaluate old/new and similar items as shown to them on previous day.
Conclusions:
Caffeine enhanced memory retrieval performance in the test subjects, which means they were better able to recall the memory acquired on the previous day. Even more interesting, although “basic recognition memory” was unaltered, retrieval of memory improved. This means that the brain of caffeinated subjects programmed and stored the visuals/memories better than the placebo subjects, and they could thus recall better.
Furthermore, a high dosage (200 mg) of caffeine consolidates memory better than lower dosage (100 mg). The authors also concluded that 200 mg is an ideal amount for memory consolidation. However, dosages higher than 300 mg were not studied, and it cannot be said if the consolidating effects increase with dosage. Therefore, there is no evidence to believe that higher dosages necessarily increase memory consolidation. The exact mechanism by which caffeine does so has not yet been deciphered. Scientists believe that it could be due to the role played by caffeine in inhibiting the adenosine function, which has adverse effects on memory functioning.
Caffeine has also been scientifically proven to show neuroprotective effects.
Caffeine showed damage reversal in brain of type II diabetic mice (i.e. neurodegeneration reversal) and restored memory-based performance.
In old and sleep-deprived humans (as well as rodents), caffeine restores memory. Rodents with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) showed reduced dysfunctional memory after consuming caffeine.
Scientists have proposed that consuming caffeine may play a preventive as well as therapeutic role in AD and other memory-related problems.
It is equally important for caffeine lovers not to ignore its downside. Previous studies (covered on Natural News) have shown that caffeine puts adrenal glands in a fight or flight function and stimulates secretion of adrenaline and noradrenaline. It generates an emergency response in normal conditions, which stimulates the central nervous system and increases alertness but eventually leads to stress, exhaustion and fatigue.
Nonetheless, this latest research reveals interesting properties of caffeine — either a cognitive enhancer or a stabilizer. This also suggests the possibility of exploring caffeine or its derived molecules as a potential drug for Alzheimer disease.
Meanwhile, for us to enjoy a guilt-free morning cup of coffee, perhaps the trick lies in finding the right balance.

In Thailand, A New Kind of Protest
Protesters put down placards and pick up pragmatism as they begin solving the problems created and/or neglected by the regime they oppose.

Since late October, 2013, protesters across Thailand have taken to the streets, occupied rally sites, seized government buildings and made their grievances known to the world. They stand in opposition of the regime of Thaksin Shinawatra – a Wall Street-backed billionaire autocrat, convicted criminal, accused mass murderer, and fugitive who is openly running the country from abroad via his nepotist appointed proxy, his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra.
Not entirely unlike other protests seen unfolding around the world, large mobilizations have periodically flooded the streets of Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok, at times attracting over a million protesters.

However, unlike many protests, particularly those promoted heavily by the Western media, including the so-called “Arab Spring” and the recent “Euromaidan” protests in Ukraine later found out to have been led by Neo-Nazis and ultra-nationalist parties with Hitleresque names like the “Fatherland Party,” hollow slogans such as “democracy” and “freedom” in Thailand are overshadowed by more specific, better articulated, and enumerated demands.
Also unlike many protests promoted by the West where regime change in favor of a pro-Western client is the one and only true objective, protesters in Thailand have begun turning their placards in for pragmatism to solve the problems that have brought them out into the streets to begin with. Rather than empower others to speak and act on their behalf, they have elected instead to circumvent the dysfunctional electoral process and empower themselves through a series of direct action campaigns.
What To Do While the Regime Clings to Power?
While much progress has been made regarding many of the protesters’ demands – the fact remains that Thaksin Shinawatra through his proxy regime is still clinging to power. The collapse of the regime is inevitable, but for Thaksin and his foreign backers – completely removed from any risk of continuing on in vain – they believe there is nothing to lose in search of even the faintest chance of political survival.
As long as the regime clings to power, the effects of its corruption, incompetence, and criminality will continue to reverberate across Thai society. Most acutely felt is the damage it has exacted across Thailand’s agricultural industry upon which much of Thailand’s workforce depends. Mobilizing the resources of the State to solve this problem is not only untenable because the regime continues to hover above the levers of power, but also because more handouts – which created the problem in the first place – will ultimately not solve the plight of Thailand’s farmers, only compound them.
The real solution to this problem is to undermine entirely the edifice on which the regime is clinging. Instead of prying its claws from the ledge, the entire edifice should be separated from the cliff’s face and sent tumbling down into the ravine below, regime and all. This requires the parallel creation of a new model for Thai agriculture – side-by-side with the dysfunctional ruins left behind by the regime. The successful creation of a parallel agricultural system could serve as a model for solving other social problems, and the first tentative steps toward accomplishing this have already been taken by Thailand’s innovative and resourceful protesters.
Farmers Facing Ruin Given Second Chance at Protest Site
The plight of Thailand’s farmers began in 2011 with the fantastical vote-buying promise of over-market prices per ton for rice delivered to government warehouses. Almost immediately, Thailand’s traditional trade partners avoided the overpriced grain and turned toward neighboring Asian nations. As rice sat in government warehouses long past what industry standards allow for, fumigation, fungus, and rot rendered the rice unfit for human consumption.
By the summer of 2013, promised subsidy prices were first slashed before payments to farmers were altogether halted. Many farmers have now gone without compensation for rice they have already turned in, and that has long since turned rancid, for well over half a year. Compounding the farmers’ dilemma was the cancellation of the subsidy program in conjunction with intentionally delayed delivery of irrigation water for farmers to begin planting their next crop. The regime feared another deluge of rice deliveries on top of the overflowing warehouses they already have failed to sell – the delay of irrigation water was a means of buying more time at the farmers’ expense.
Even as farmers now begin receiving water Thailand’s rice industry lies in such ruins, few know to whom they will be able to sell their rice and at what price. For a segment of the population already struggling against the constant fear of insurmountable debt and lacking any means to diversify their economic activity, they are facing destitution and desperation unlike anything they have seen in decades.

Enter Buddhist monk and activist Luang Pu Buddha Issara, who has led the permanent occupation of northern Bangkok’s Government Complex for months. Between leading protesters and coordinating with the larger anti-regime movement, Buddha Issara has also done something novel, innovative, and rare – added pragmatism to the sea of placards found among his followers.
Money raised by the various fundraising activities has gone into the purchase of a modest rice mill. The mill processes about 1 ton of rice per day, brought in by desperate farmers unable to receive compensation from the regime. The milled rice is then sealed in bags and sold to Bangkok’s city goers. The proceeds are given back to the farmers. Buddha Issara has also asked farmers to bring other forms of produce – fruits and vegetables – to the protest site to likewise be sold. It is the first step toward a farm-to-city market, short-circuiting the corrupt middlemen and rancid warehouses that constitute the failed rice scheme the regime has created.

Did you think that, because it says on the package “no rBST hormones” or “no rBGH used with these cows,” they didn’t kill their babies and carve out their stomachs for some rennet? If you’ve abstained from eating meat because you feel sorry for animals, especially ones that are treated inhumanely, what about their babies? You may want to make your own pizzas with vegetarian cheese instead of ordering out or dining in. You may want to rethink your choices. Also, you may want to check the labels on every package of cheese you buy, from now on, for rennet, the lining of calves’ stomachs.
If you are vegetarian, but not vegan, you consume eggs and other dairy products, figuring that no animals had to die to produce that food, but what about the calves? There are over 10 million cows being milked in America right now. On average, those milking cows give birth about once every 16 months. That means around 7 million calves are birthed each year. Half of those calves are born female and are raised to become milking cows like their moms. Of the males, only about one in five become veal cutlets on people’s dinner plates, so what happens to the rest? Are they “studded out?”
A typical baby male calf weighing about 100 pounds is sold at the age of one week, and four months later they’re sold at cattle auctions. Buying cheese without rennet is very important
Rennet is added to most cheese to speed the coagulation process and separate the milk into solid curds and liquid whey. The way is drained away, and the curd is pressed and molded into your cheese blocks or shredded. Some are matured (aged) after that. The rennet is used because it contains an enzyme called chymosin from the fourth stomach of newborn calves or lambs. Only the babies have this enzyme to help them digest and absorb milk. Beware of GM rennet
There is more bad news, before bringing the good news, so hang in there. Did you know that there is genetically modified (GM) rennet? Yes, not just from calves fed GM feed either. This gets uglier than that. There are laboratories which “create” rennet from fungal and bacterial sources that function like the animal-based kind. They may even label it as “non-animal” rennet. Therein lies the trick. Genetic engineering techniques can extract the DNA which encodes for chymosin (from calf stomach cells) and insert it into microbes — thus creating a microorganism that grows chymosin in commercial quantities. Eat vegetarian cheese, and maybe all those calves won’t end up on the shelves of the convenient stores in the form of snacks, beef jerky, dog chews and conventional cheese for the Obamacare masses.
