Protesters ordered out of Halifax park Friday under camping ban

Police have arrested several people at the Occupy Nova Scotia site in Halifax as they enforce an eviction order and dismantle tents.

Police teams descended on Victoria Park on Friday afternoon, a couple of hours after demonstrators were told to leave the city park because they were camping illegally.

Fourteen people were arrested as of 4 p.m. AT, all for obstruction of justice, Halifax Regional Police said.

“The time has come for the encampment to end,” Mayor Peter Kelly said in a statement. “Our parks are for all of the public, not an unregulated campground for some.”

About 200 people gathered in the park while protesters also dismantled more than a dozen tents and loaded them into a van headed for a nearby church. One demonstrator said they would regroup at the church and figure out their next move since they’ve been told they can’t return to Grand Parade.

North American Integration and the Ties That Bind

Dana Gabriel
BE YOUR OWN LEADER
November 7, 2011

After a two year hiatus, the leaders of the U.S., Canada and Mexico are set to meet for a trilateral summit. While the push for further North American integration continues incrementally, at this time, it is unlikely that discussions will yield any grand new initiatives that involve the participation of all three NAFTA partners. Instead, the meeting could be used to build off of bilateral discussions already underway. This includes negotiations between the U.S. and Canada on a North American Security perimeter deal designed to accelerate the flow of people and goods across the border.

In an article from several months back, Robert Pastor, who has been a leading proponent of continental integration, emphasized that Obama’s jobs strategy should be a North American one. He explained how the U.S. can expand trade faster by focusing on its neighbours and also pointed out that few Americans realize just how dependent the U.S. is on Canada and Mexico. In order to facilitate this approach, Pastor recommended, “We should eliminate restrictive ‘rules of origin,’ which add a tax as high as the tariff that was eliminated by NAFTA, and combine, rather than duplicate, customs’ forms, personnel and frequent-traveler programs.” He also called on President Obama to, “expand his infrastructure fund to be a North American one, with contributions from all three countries.” Pastor went on to say, “The leaders of each nation should then instruct their transportation ministers to develop a North American plan for transportation and infrastructure that would include another trade corridor from the busiest transit point in Windsor, Ontario, to southern Mexico.” This sounds a lot like plans for a NAFTA superhighway.

Occupy protesters to move for Remembrance Day

CBC News
October 31, 2011

Demonstrators are moving their tents out of Halifax’s Grand Parade for two ceremonies, but they vow to return after Remembrance Day.

Participants of Occupy Nova Scotia say they’re leaving out of respect for a Dignity Day ceremony on Nov. 9 and a Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11.

They plan to hold a rally and cleanup next Sunday and be in Victoria Square two days later.

Michael Anthony told CBC News they reached consensus after much debate. He considers the move a trade-off.

“We’re here, we’re established and people are supporting us, and a lot of people might not support us if we leave because they’ll see that as a compromise. But if we don’t leave, a lot more people won’t support us,” he said Monday.
