Solar poles to become quadrupolar in May

Magnetic field polarity at the solar poles will reverse and become quadrupolar in May, meaning positive fields will emerge in the North and South poles and negative fields will emerge on the equator, according to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and other institutes.
When a similar phenomenon occurred about 300 years ago, the Earth’s average temperature fell slightly.
A research team led by Saku Tsuneta, a professor at the observatory, analyzed solar magnetic fields data using Hinode, an observational satellite, and confirmed that the polarity of the magnetic field at the North Pole began to reverse in July last year.
The researchers also found the magnetic field at the South Pole, which was expected to reverse along with the North Pole, maintained a positive polarity, ensuring the formation of a quadrupole magnetic field.
The cause behind the shifts in polar fields is not understood. However, it is known that the shifts coincide with the increase and decrease in the number of sunspots over an about 11-year cycle.
The current sunspot cycle has stretched for close to 13 years. A similar situation occurred in the 17th to 18th century, when the average temperature of the Northern Hemisphere decreased by 0.6 C. The research team believes the quadrupolar pattern also emerged at that time.

Per the Japanese HINODE team — in about one months time — (may 2012) the suns north pole will reach a reading of “zero” and instead of a regular “pole shift” .. it will form into MULTIPLE positive poles — thus making MULTIPLE negative poles which correspond to these new “north poleS” … and to top it off.. this is happening a year ahead of the expected “nominal” time.

European Space Agency(ESA)The polarity of the extended uni-polar magnetic field in the solar polar region is known to reverse every 11 years, and the reversal occurs at around the maximum of solar activity, which is expected to take place at around 2013 May (NOAA ).
High latitude magnetic fields have been observed with solar telescopes on the ground. However, actual process of the polar field reversal is poorly understood because of the difficulty of the observations on the extreme limb combined with atmospheric seeing effect. The solar optical telescope aboard the Hinode satellite allows us for the first time to perform extremely high-quality observations of the deep polar region of the Sun (Figure A). The initial discoveries include that there are many magnetic patches with intense magnetic field in the polar regions. Their field strength is close to that of sunspots, and their size is as large as small sunspots called pore.
The international research team led by Saku Tsuneta, a professor at NAOJ, has been performing the monthly polar observations with Hinode from September 2008. We here report the discovery that the average magnetic flux of the north polar region is rapidly and steadily decreasing during the period of 2008 and 2012 (Figure B). The reversal (from minus to plus polarity) is taking place in sequence from lower latitude to higher latitude. The average magnetic flux of the polar region soon becomes zero. The estimated completion of the reversal of the north polar region will take place in 1 months or so, about one year earlier than the nominal expected reversal time.
In striking contrast to the north polar situation, the magnetic flux of the south polar region has been very stable, and maintains the plus polarity (Figure C). These latest Hinode observations suggest that the global magnetic field of the Sun will become different from the normal bipolar configuration.
Observations of the polar magnetic fields are the key for understanding the cyclic solar dynamo. Their results will shed light on the origin of the solar magnetism, and will contribute to our understating on the Sun’s effect to the solar-terrestrial environment.

University of Texas researchers design chip allowing mobile devices to see through walls

As unbelievable as it sounds, researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas have created an imager chip for mobile devices which would turn an ordinary cell phone into something which can see through walls, wood, plastics, paper, skin and other objects.
Using the terahertz (THz) band of the electromagnetic spectrum, the wavelengths of which fall between the microwave and infrared bands, the chip could signify a revolution in the surveillance capabilities of mobile phones along with new chips like Broadcom’s BCM4752 which is capable of providing ultra-precise location data.
Combine this with citizen spying applications and the techniques which gently push people to conduct surveillance without them knowing what they’re actually doing, patents from Google which would allow them to collect the data from such chips and the National Security Agency’s (NSA’s) new data center and you have the penultimate surveillance state.
The research team connected two separate advances in science: the mostly untapped terahertz frequency range of the electromagnetic spectrum and cutting edge microchip technology.
For those who are unfamiliar or need a refresher, the electromagnetic spectrum makes up all wavelengths of electromagnetic energy from visible light to radio waves to microwaves to infrared to ultraviolet and everything in between.
Most consumer devices have yet to leverage the terahertz band, which means that this could be truly revolutionary technology, although some like myself might think that this revolution is not necessarily all that wonderful.
“We’ve created approaches that open a previously untapped portion of the electromagnetic spectrum for consumer use and life-saving medical applications,” said Dr. Kenneth O, an electrical engineering professor at the University of Texas at Dallas as well as the director of the Texas Analog Center of Excellence.
“The terahertz range is full of unlimited potential that could benefit us all,” he added, although I’m not quite sure how allowing cell phones to see through walls and thus erase what tiny shred of privacy we have left would benefit us all.
This technology would likely not even be as expensive as one might expect. This is because the new approach would allow images to be created with THz-range signals without the need for several lenses or other expensive equipment within the device.
This would not only reduce cost, but also size, making the technology something which we could realistically see in mobile phones in the future.
The University of Texas at Dallas press release notes that the techniques involved in the manufacturing of the microchip involved would also allow it to be applied to consumer devices.
Chips utilizing the Complimentary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology, which forms the basis of a great deal of consumer electronics like personal computers, mobile devices, high definition televisions, game consoles, etc. would make this technology even more affordable.
“CMOS is affordable and can be used to make lots of chips,” Dr. O said. “The combination of CMOS and terahertz means you could put this chip and receiver on the back of a cell phone, turning it into a device carried in your pocket that can see through objects.”
Thankfully, Dr. O seems to be, at least to a certain extent, concerned with privacy. This is evidenced by his team focusing on uses in distances of four inches or less, although this does not mean, by any means, that this technology could not be used at a greater distance when it is undoubtedly used by the government and military.
Some of the more innocuous potential applications could range from turning an ordinary phone into a stud finder or document authentication platform or even a counterfeit currency detector.
Manufacturing companies could potentially use it in process control and with more communication channels available in the THz range compared to the range currently used for wireless communications, data could be more rapidly transferred than the currently utilized frequency ranges allow.
There are even potential applications in healthcare fields, according to researchers.
It is possible that this type of imaging technology could be used to detect cancerous tumors, breath analysis for disease diagnosis and even air toxicity monitoring applications.
“There are all kinds of things you could be able to do that we just haven’t yet thought about,” said Dr. O, who also currently holds the Texas Instruments Distinguished Chair.
The research team’s next move will be to create an entire functioning imaging system which is based on the THz frequency range leveraging CMOS chip technology.
This research is being supported by the Center for Circuit and Systems Solutions (C2S2 Center) and carried out at the Texas Analog Center of Excellence (TxACE).
TxACE is funded by the Semiconducter Research Corporation (SRC), Texas Instruments Inc., and the state of Texas through the Texas Emerging Technology Fund, the University of Texas system and the University of Texas at Dallas.
This research was presented at the most recent meeting of the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), according to Homeland Security News Wire.
While there are indeed some very promising, positive applications for this type of technology, there are also some grave concerns in terms of privacy, which is a commodity we are quickly losing in today’s Big Brother society.

Legendary singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell has said she is ‘trying’ to quit the music business to help out sufferers of Morgellons disease ‘ an illness she first publicly admitted to having in 2010.
‘Two nights ago, I went out for the first time since Dec. 23: I don’t look so bad under incandescent light, but I look scary under daylight,’ she said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
‘In America, the Morgellons is always diagnosed as ‘delusion of parasites,’ and they send you to a psychiatrist,’ she added later. ‘I’m actually trying to get out of the music business to battle for Morgellons sufferers to receive the credibility that’s owed to them.’
Mitchell has had an illustrious career beginning in the late 1960s folk scene. Her 1971 album Blue is considered to be one of the great masterpieces of folk music.
Throughout her career she has performed with a number of people and became immersed in the Laurel Canyon scene which was taking place in the Hollywood Hills.
During the interview she surprised fans by slagging off Bob Dylan and accusing Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane) and Janis Joplin of sleeping with their whole bands..
‘You were born Roberta Joan Anderson, and someone named Bobby Zimmerman became Bob Dylan,’ performance artist John Kelly (who is the creator of a Joni Mitchell tribute show and was also being interviewed with the singer).
‘Bob is not authentic at all,’ Mitchell rebutted. ‘He’s a plagiarist and his name and voice are fake. Everything about Bob is a deception. We are like night and day, he and I.’

The west pacific, is the obvious stand out point for activity — the other LARGE east pacific earthquakes seem to be occurring almost like a buildup or compensation for the excessive movement north of New Zealand, west of Vanutau to Sumatra.. and.. north to Japan..
Central america is responding to these hundreds of 4.0M and 5.0M in the w. pacific.. by showing the intermittent 7.0M+ borderline 8.0 magnitude earthquakes. Today (april 18 2012) we also saw volcanic plume activity at Popocatepetl volcano in Mexico.
West Coast USA should be prepared for these 6.0M+ earthquakes (or greater) to occur most likely Oregon northeast towards Vancouver Island BC/Canada. Also area to watch would be central California (mono lake) south to Baja Mexico/California/Gulf of California.
North America.. be aware along the edge of the north american craton / Laurentia. This means states like Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia , W. Virginia, Pennsylvania … watch out for the potential for 5.0M+ earthquakes (or greater). This threat will continue to exist as long as the movement continues half a planet away over in the W. Pacific. The pressure put upon the north american craton is showing at the weak points.. the spots where either dormant volcanoes exist, or where human activity (such as fracking / drilling) has weakened the craton edge with shafts dug to remove oil and natural gas.
Overall .. this recent return to noticeable 6.0M+ earthquake movement is a sign that whatever is causing this unrest is not abating.
