Egypt bans online porn, causing split in society

Egypt has officially banned sexually explicit websites, three years after the country’s administrative court denounced pornographic content as “venomous and vile.”

The country’s Prosecutor General has ordered government ministries to block porn from the web, after ultraconservative Salafis launched a campaign called “Pure Net” to prohibit pornography online, according to an anonymous government official, AP reports.

The move by Prosecutor General Abdel Maguid Mahmoud has caused a split in Egyptian society. Conservatives welcomed the order as the first step towards an Islamic Egypt, while liberals denounced the move as a government crackdown on freedom of expression.

Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Mahmoud Ghozlan described the decision as “a first step towards establishing a society based on ethics,” in a statement to Al-Ahram’s Arabic-language news site.

The Salafist Nour Party also welcomed the decision, adding that the ban would not impact personal and public freedoms. “Egyptian society is conservative by nature and rejects these websites,” Mohamed Nour, the party’s spokesman, asserted.

One politician called the move “a first step towards applying Islamic Law in Egypt,” MP Ali Wanis was quoted by news website ahramonline as saying.

Others in Egypt, especially from liberal circles, were quick to criticize the ban.

“Those who are preoccupied with banning websites (which they will not be able to block for technical reasons) should be more concerned about the drafting of Egypt’s new constitution,” Ayman El-Sayad, a liberal journalist and advisor to President Mohamed Morsi, tweeted.

The high costs associated with the blocking of thousands of websites have prevented the three-year-old ban ruling from being fully implemented.

In 2009, under the Hosni Mubarak government, a Cairo court ruled that “freedom of expression and public rights should be restricted by maintaining the fundamentals of religion, morality and patriotism,” condemning graphic websites and ruling to ban them.

A scheme of how the ban would be implemented has not yet been provided to the public.

Nor’easter to be weaker than expected

An early-season nor’easter storm will bring another round of coastal flooding in areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy Wednesday into Thursday. It is now forecast to be weaker and move farther offshore than originally forecast. That’s good news for New Jersey and New York coasts.

System is expected to reach minimal central pressure of 990 mB as it tracks north-northeastward along the coast on Wednesday and intensify into a  Nor’easter storm by Wednesday evening, impacting  Long Island and coastal Massachusetts, including Cape Cod.

Winds tropical storm-force (39+ mph) are predicted to affect Southern New Jersey, eastern Long Island, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, but miss the areas hardest hit by Sandy–northern New Jersey and the New York City area. According to Dr. Jeff Masters from Weather Underground, the storm will likely bring wind gusts up to 50 mph (80 km/h) and a storm surge of 2 – 3 feet along the coasts of Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, and New York, including New York City. Mandatory evacuations have been issued for residents living low-lying waterfront areas for sections of Brick Township in New Jersey. High waves of 10 – 20 feet (3-6 meters) will cause moderate beach erosion along much of the coastline damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The greatest flooding will occur during the Wednesday early afternoon high tide cycle.

Nor’easter may bring the season’s first accumulating snow to a broad swath from Delaware and Maryland to New England.

Dr. Masters points that this is a pretty ordinary Nor’easter of the type the Northeast sees several times per year, and will not cause major damage. However, it will slow down recovery efforts from Hurricane Sandy.

About 925,000 people are still without power in the Northeast (in contrast to initial 8.6 million one week ago).

At least 39 dead in 7.4 Guatemala quake

At least 39 people have been killed and hundreds remain missing after a powerful earthquake struck off the Pacific coast of Guatemala, where a tsunami warning has now been issued.

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake centered about 160km southwest of Guatemala City. It is the strongest to hit the country since a deadly 1976 quake that killed 23,000.

The death toll is feared to rise as survivors report widespread landslides and people trapped under the rubble.

The quake was so powerful that it made crossways from Guatemala City to neighboring Mexico City. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was a possibility of a local tsunami, within 320km of the epicenter.

Local radio reports widespread power outages and cuts in telephone service.

The mountain village of San Marcos, 130km from the epicenter, has suffered extensive damage with some 30 homes destroyed. More than 2,000 soldiers have been sent to help with the relief effort.

Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina has asked people not to travel on motorways, as several highways in the west of the country have been cut off by landslides.
