VIDEO — The Problem With Facebook

Facebook is a complex ecosystem of individuals, creators, brands and advertisers, but I don’t think it serves any of these groups particularly well because its top priority is to make money. Now, I don’t think making money is a bad thing, in fact I hope to make some myself. The problem is the only way Facebook has found to make money is by treating all entities on the site as advertisers and charging them to share their content.

This business plan backfires because 1) not all entities ARE advertisers and 2) it was the content from these people, specifically friends, family, and creators that made the site worth visiting in the first place. Now the incentives are misaligned:
– individuals want to see great content, but they are now seeing more paid content and organically shared content which appeals to the lowest common denominator (babies, weddings, and banal memes)
– creators want to reach fans but their posts are being throttled to force them to pay to be seen
– brands and advertisers have to pay once to advertise their page on Facebook, and then pay again to reach the people who have already liked their page. Plus Facebook is not a place where people generally go to buy things.

Facebook stands in contrast to other social media like Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram where all content is shared with all followers.

Colorado Marijuana Dispensary taps Bitcoin to Evade Federal Laws

5 popular but harmful drugs that can be replaced with marijuanaCoinDesk
Jan 12, 2014

At least one marijuana dispensary in Colorado has reportedly begun accepting bitcoin.

Colorado’s decision to legalize cannabis has been filling headlines for weeks, and the hype is still going strong.

Investors have been piling up in the marijuana market, ranging from reputable medicinal marijuana companies to highly speculative penny stocks.

The general public seems to be very interested indeed – outside some dispensaries the queues of pot lovers are incredibly large, resembling the lines frequently formed in front of Apple Stores following an iPhone launch.

However, there are a number of problems. Demand has been so strong that many dispensaries are having trouble getting enough marijuana to sell, although this is likely a temporary issue.

Before It’s News

Jan 10, 2014

A 19-year-old student from England got high on a party drug called ‘meow meow’ and went on a wild rampage that ended with him slicing off his own penis.

His mother (who he stabbed earlier in his rampage) called for help after she found her son hanging out of his bedroom window with blood gushing out of him.

Once emergency officials arrived, they rushed him and his mother to the hospital to treat their injuries. After multiple surgeries, both the mom and son are in stable condition.

And shockingly, doctors were able to reattach his penis. A source close to the family told the Mirror the following,

“He is normally a lovely lad and very bright. But unfortunately, he had started dabbling in drugs. He had come home from university for Christmas. It looks like he took mephedrone and completely flipped out attacking his mum and then himself.”

Little Girls Accept Bitcoin at Their Coffee Stand

Is this the first Bitcoin brick-and-mortar run by children?

These two little itty-bitty and enterprising girls are showing an even wider Bitcoin acceptance by allowing payment at their Noe Valley, San Francisco coffee stand. Are people actually paying them in Bitcoin?

Mia & Taylor’s Coffee Shop accepts the payment with a blown-up QR code. Coffee, lemonade and cookies are sold for around a buck – broken cookies are free. Awww…

A Tweet targeted to a Noe Valley event page got picked up from there. But actually, the image was taken and posted by Reddit user DorkusPrime which also went viral. The commenters there seem to believe they will soon be shut down by the police – yikes!

They’ve received 33 transactions which some, of course, came in from the Reddit users who decoded their Bitcoin address. A week ago, they had gathered the equivalent of $70 in Bitcoin. (source)

The value of Bitcoin has seen some ups and downs, but for a few reasons, it might be here to stay. Larger businesses are responding to consumer interest in the totally decentralized form of payment. So from lemonade stands to top-dog corps – Bitcoin is now serving everywhere.

Researchers: Caffeine Enhances Memory

Natural Blaze
Jan 12, 2014

For some, it’s the tradition of steeping tea leaves to brew the perfect cup of tea. For others, it’s the morning shuffle to a coffee maker for a hot jolt of java. Then there are those who like their wake up with the kind of snap and a fizz usually found in a carbonated beverage.Regardless of the routine, the consumption of caffeine is the energy boost of choice for millions to wake up or stay up. Now, however, researchers at the Johns Hopkins University have found another use for the stimulant: memory enhancer.Michael Yassa, assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins, and his team of scientists found that caffeine has a positive effect on long-term memory in humans. Their research, published by the journal Nature Neuroscience, shows that caffeine enhances certain memories at least up to 24 hours after it is consumed.
