VIA train and Ottawa city bus collide during morning commute, six dead, including the bus driver

A double-decker Ottawa city bus drove through warning lights and guard rails into the side of a crossing passenger train, killing six and injuring at least 30, witnesses to the collision said Wednesday. The corner had been on a “severe public safety issue” list for more than a decade.

Five people were pronounced dead on scene, while the sixth died in hospital, after the OC Transpo bus slammed into theVia Rail train that was pulling into Fallowfield Station, in the suburb of Barrhaven, southwest of Ottawa. Ten people were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Three of the six deceased have been positively identified but police are not releasing names at this time out of respect to the victims’ families.

The driver of an Ottawa bus has been identified as Dave Woodard. Woodard’s name has not been released by the Ottawa police, but is being widely reported by CTV, the Ottawa Citizen and the CBC.

“One of Woodard’s family members, who did not want to be identified, said everyone is struggling with the loss. She chose to wait until the entire family was informed about the tragic death before speaking publicly about Woodard,” wrote the Citizen. It was Woodard’s wife’s birthday on Tuesday.

The train’s locomotive and a passenger car came off the tracks, but all of the casualties were on the bus, with no injuries among the 100 people on the train. The train came to a halt about 100 metres west of the accident site.

The city’s double-decker buses can seat up to 82 people. OC Transpo said they do not know how many were on the bus Wednesday morning.

Images posted to the Transportation Safety Board’s Flickr page, seem to indicate the bus hit the side of the train’s locomotive under the driver’s cab, less than a metre from the nose.

Bus passengers said they yelled “Stop! Stop!” as the bus ran through warning symbols at the train crossing. The driver has been confirmed to be among the deceased by the union. The union said the driver had about ten years of experience.

“People started screaming, ‘Stop, stop!’ because they could see the train coming down the track,” Tanner Trepanier, who was sitting on the top level of the bus, told The Canadian Press.

VIDEO — Rebels v. Radicals: Infighting erupts as US intervention in Syria halts

RT
September 19, 2013

The civil war that’s devastated Syria for more than two years has seemingly changed beyond recognition from the initial conflict. Rebel forces and al-Qaeda-linked factions that once fought side by side in the anti-Assad push are now pitted against each other in violent battles. And reports suggest that increasingly, the more radical elements appear to be gaining ground. RT is joined by James Corbett editor of The Corbett Report.

Manuel re-intensified to hurricane strength, expected to make landfall again

September 19, 2013

hurricane_manuel_sep_19_2013Two tropical storms, Ingrid and Manuel, brought heavy rainfall and caused destruction and chaos throughout Mexico over the last couple of days. Current estimates are that 80 people have been killed. The forecasters are warning of more storms ahead as Manuel re-intensified to hurricane strength in the last few hours and is expected to make landfall again. Tens of thousands of people have been trapped in massive landslides.

Manuel first hit Mexico as tropical storm on Sunday, September 15, and intensified to hurricane strength on Wednesday, calmed down and re-intensified on Thursday.

On Monday, September 16, a major landslide hit small village of La Pintada in the country’s southern mountains. Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto said that at least 58 people are missing in the village, which has a population of about 400 people. He described the damage there as “catastrophic.”  It’s unclear how many people remain buried, he said.

More than half of La Pintada was demolished, few homes were left,” Maria del Carmen Catalan, a 27-year-old mother of three, said at a convention center that serves as a refuge for storm victims (GP).

Looting has broken out in the flooded Mexican beach resort of Acapulco as the government struggled to reach people cut off by flooding.

More than one million people have been affected and Acapulco’s airport terminal was under water, stranding tourists.

Dozens of homes in Tampico, one of the main Gulf ports north of Veracruz, were waterlogged when the Panuco River burst its banks, forcing evacuations.

11 Million Users Drop Facebook Over Privacy Concerns

By JG Vibes

New research shows Facebook has lost a total of 11 million users, nine million in the US and two million in Britain. Researchers at the University of Vienna analyzed 600 users and found they quit for reasons like privacy concerns, general dissatisfaction, shallow conversations and fear of becoming addicted, Alalam reported.[1]

Facebook developed a following because it allowed people to connect with friends more easily, and due to these increased capabilities they became the dominant social network on the internet.

Over the years Facebook has become one of the most popular websites in the world, and recently the company has been taking advantage of their social network dominance.

The newest controversies surrounding Facebook have been the intentional censorship of activist profiles and the “promotional posts” scam which has cut off every single Facebook user from a vast majority of their posts.

Since these changes silently went into effect a few months ago, every single Facebook user can now only see a fraction of the stories which should be in their news feed.

For artists, activists and people with websites, there is now an option for them to promote their posts for a ridiculous fee and have more of their fans see their posts.

Many Facebook users don’t even realize that this is happening because unless you’re using the site for promotional purposes you don’t really notice.

Also, for years there have been so many rumors about Facebook charging that now when activists try to tell people about these new changes, it has turned into a “boy cried wolf scenario” and no one pays attention.

In addition to this monetizing scam there has also been an increase in censorship.
