Inside nanotechnology’s little universe of big unknowns.

This article first appeared at Orion Magazine under the title “Pandora’s Boxes.” You can enjoy future Orion articles by signing up to the magazine’s free trial subscription program.

A pair of scientists, sporting white clean-suits complete with helmets and face masks, approach a prefab agricultural greenhouse in a clearing at Duke University’s Research Forest. Inside are two long rows of wooden boxes the size of large horse troughs, which hold samples of the natural world that surrounds them—the pine groves and rhododendron thickets of North Carolina’s piedmont, which at this moment are alive with bird song.

Looking a lot like the government bad guys in E.T., the two men cautiously hover over a row of boxes containing native sedges, water grasses, and Zebra fish to spray a fine mist of silver nanoparticles over them. Their goal: to investigate how the world inside the boxes is altered by these essentially invisible and notoriously unpredictable particles.

The researchers are part of a multidisciplinary coalition of scientists from Duke, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Howard, Virginia Tech, and the University of Kentucky, headquartered at Duke’s Center for the Environmental Implications of NanoTechnology (CEINT), that represents one of the most comprehensive efforts yet to measure how nanoparticles affect ecosystems and biological systems.

So far the questions about whether nanoparticles are an environmental risk outnumber the answers, which is why the Duke scientists take the precaution of wearing clean-suits while dosing the boxes—no one’s sure what exposure to a high concentration of nanoparticles might do. Among the few things we do know about them are that they sail past the blood-brain barrier and can harm the nervous systems of some animals.

The regulation of nanoparticles has been recommended for more than a decade, but there’s no agreement on exactly how to do it. Meanwhile, the lid has already been lifted on nanotechnology. The use of man-made nanoparticles has spread into almost every area of our lives: food, clothing, medicine, shampoo, toothpaste, sunscreen, and thousands of other products.

Regulatory structures, both here and abroad, are completely unprepared for this onslaught of nanoproducts, because nanoparticles don’t fit into traditional regulatory categories. Additionally, companies often shield details about them by labeling them “proprietary”; they’re difficult to detect; we don’t have protocols for judging their effects; and we haven’t even developed the right tools for tracking them. If nanotechnology and its uses represent a frontier of sorts, it’s not simply the Wild West—it’s the Chaotic, Undiscovered, Uncontrollable West.

St. Jude Day Storms: 13 Dead as Hurricane-Force Winds Batter Britain, France, Germany

weather.com
October 28, 2013

LONDON — A savage coastal storm powered by hurricane-force gusts slashed its way through Britain and western Europe on Monday, felling trees, flooding lowlands and snarling traffic in the air, at sea and on land. At least 13 people were reported killed.

It was one of the worst storms to hit the region in years. The deadly tempest had no formal name — and wasn’t officially classified as a hurricane due to a meteorological standard — but it was dubbed the St. Jude storm (after the patron saint of lost causes) and “stormageddon” on social networks.

Gusts of 99 miles per hour were reported on the Isle of Wight in southern England, while gusts up to 80 mph hit the British mainland. Later in the day, parts of Denmark saw record gusts up of to 120 mph and an autobahn in central Germany was shut down by gusts up to 62 mph.

“This was not just a British storm,” said weather.com meteorologist Nick Wiltgen. “The core of powerful winds marched relentlessly east, raking northern France and the Low Countries before slamming into northern Germany, Denmark, and southern Sweden. That latter phase in particular was exceptionally intense, with a 105-mph gust in extreme northern Germany and many many places gusting over 85 mph in the surrounding area.”

Wiltgen warned the high winds would sweep across the southern Baltic Sea and into the countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania Monday night.

(MORE: Track the UK Storm)

All across the region, people were warned to stay indoors. Hundreds of trees were uprooted or split, blocking roads and crushing cars. The Dutch were told to leave their beloved bicycles at home for safety’s sake.

At least thirteen storm-related deaths were reported, most victims crushed by falling trees. Germany had six deaths, Britain had five and the Netherlands and Denmark had one each. One woman was also missing after being swept into the surf in France.

Two people were killed in London by a gas explosion and a British teen who played in the storm-driven surf was swept out to sea. A man in Denmark was killed when a brick flew off and hit him in the head.

Despite the strength of its gusts, the storm was not considered a hurricane because it didn’t form over warm expanses of open ocean like the hurricanes that batter the Caribbean and the United States. Britain’s national weather service, the Met Office, said Britain does not get hurricanes because those are “warm latitude” storms that draw their energy from seas far warmer than the North Atlantic. Monday’s storm also did not have an “eye” at its center like most hurricanes.

Thousands of activists march on Washington to rally against NSA spying

Stop Watching Us rally credit: @johnzangas/Twitter

Activist Post
October 27, 2013

Thousands of activists joined forces on Saturday to protest the NSA surveillance of both domestic and international targets by marching on Washington, D.C.

This comes shortly after it was revealed that the NSA spied on the phones of 35 world leaders. Furthermore, both France and Mexico have recently responded quite critically to U.S. surveillance in their countries, though Director of National Intelligence James Clapper issued a cleverly worded denial of the reports.

On Saturday, it was also reported that 21 countries are in the process of creating a UN resolution to condemn NSA surveillance.

The march was organized by Stop Watching Us, a coalition of over 100 groups ranging from the ACLU to the Electronic Frontier Foundation to FreedomWorks to Demand Progress to the Council on American-Islamic Relations to Occupy Wall Street and many more.

A statement from Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor responsible for leaking the now famous documents exposing mass collection of phone records and widespread internet surveillance, was read to rally participants.

“Our representatives in Congress tell us this is not surveillance. They’re wrong. Now it’s time for the government to learn from us,” Snowden wrote in the statement read by Jesselyn Radack, national security director for the Government Accountability Project.

Radack gestured in the direction of the Capitol building and said, “We are watching you,” according to USA Today.

“Today, no telephone in America makes a call without leaving a record with the NSA. Today, no Internet transaction enters or leaves America without passing through the NSA’s hands,” Snowden’s statement read, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

Participants carried a wide variety of signs, but all promoted the same goal of an end to mass surveillance.

The rally featured many notable speakers, including Rep. Justin Amash, a Michigan Republican noted for his defense of privacy.

Amash was an early critic of the NSA’s surveillance and has been an ardent opponent of other pieces of legislation he deemed to be a threat to the Constitution.

Dennis Kucinich also spoke at the rally:

Multiple NSA whistleblowers also showed up at the rally, including Russell Tice:

And Thomas Drake:

There were even rallies in Germany to protest the NSA surveillance in their country:

It remains to be seen if the government will react to the rise of negative popular sentiment in response to NSA spying.

Up until this point, it hasn’t seemed to sway the Obama administration, many legislators and government agencies all that much, since, as the Chicago Tribune put it, they “have defended the NSA programs as crucial in protecting U.S. national security and helping thwart past militant plot[s].”

U.S. Public Schools Now Legally Torturing and Sometimes Even Killing Students — video included

Intellihub

By Shepard Ambellas | October 27, 2013 | 2:52pm EST | Special Report

From “Skin-Shock Therapy” to exclusion rooms, public school systems across the United States are engaging our youth with in torturous and aggressive discipline measures, in some cases ending in the death of a student.

(INTELLIHUB) — In an extremely shocking and sickening report, thankfully brought to us by Brian Ross of Nightline on ABC News, we can clearly see a pattern and push toward a police state trend in America that’s not slowing down anytime soon. Public and private schools around the country are now in the business of torturing students and in some cases like Corey Foster’s mentioned in the report, even killing them in the process all in the name of discipline and safety.[1]

Foster, now dead from cardiac arrest during a failed restraint session after being told to “stop playing basketball”, is just one of many examples of students that have been killed in school discipline procedures.

Although these restraint and torture methods are barbaric, especially for children, surprisingly the methods are not illegal in most states. In fact, only “17 states” have laws limiting such action within the school system.

Experts are split on the use of these techniques, while some say they are good for the children and can even protect them in some cases, others simply are not having it, claiming that children exposed to such techniques become even more violent displaying even more behavioral problems down the line. Although a general consensus amongst the public concludes these methods are not warranted, the government backed indoctrination programs will continue for now.

As a side note, I myself attended the 7th grade in a Pensacola public school in the “sunshine state” of good old Florida, in the “Bible Belt” mind you, and had one encounter myself that I will never forget.

On one hot summer morning during P.E. class I was attacked by a fellow student in the locker room as he came at me full force in a boxing style stance unloading a melee of punches. Out of instinct, I rapidly reacted and defended myself as would anyone in this situation delivering a one kick K.O. to my attacker. After the fight I was taken to the office and I quickly realized it didn’t matter to the school staff that I did not start the fight, I was going to be punished anyways.

To my surprise the school planned to inflict physical pain on me. My discipline was 1-week suspension and what the school refereed to as “ten licks”, meaning I was going to get paddled, and paddled good.

Once I arrived at the school’s Dean’s Office, the staff had me bend over. They made me put my hands on the desk as the Dean proceeded to pull out a 2 foot long wooden paddle about 1–1/2 inches thick waving it around to intimidate me. I was terrified.

The paddle was filled with holes drilled all throughout the paddle’s face so the Dean can gain more speed with each swing, limiting the air resistance before slamming into the victims buttocks. And yes, I was the next victim. Let’s just say the “ten licks” I received that day severely bruised and hurt me beyond any ass beating I have ever received prior to or after for that matter.

Once I arrived at home later that day, my Mom was in shock. She saw the marks on me from the torture the school inflicted and was infuriated. She immediately went down to the school and demanded that someone be held accountable. However, she found out to her surprise, no one cared. In fact, the school staff told her that the torture was “legal” and “approved.

What is wrong with our public school systems? Why should teachers and school staff be able to push the limits of discipline and use these torturous tactics?

BREAKING NEWS: Environment Canada Releases Geoengineering Programs to C.A.N.

by Frank Gotz
Canadian Awareness Network

October 27, 2013

I sent an e-mail to Environment Canada (EC) on Aug 2nd 2013 asking for a list of companies that are participating in geoengineering in Canada pursuant to the Weather Modifications Information Act.  The WMI Act is a piece of legislation which lists the rules, restrictions and punishments for modifying the weather in Canada without government permission.

I received reply back one month later from an EC representative, by the name of Isabelle Landry , who informed me that they need my home address because the amount of information they wanted to give me was too big for an e-mail and they would send me a disc.  Approximately one week later I received a package in the mail from EC a long with a letter which wrote:

“Dear Mr. Gotz

Thank you for your email message of August 2nd, 2013, requesting a list of companies participating in geoengineering activities, specifically weather modification, in Canada…

Starting in 1948, the federal government was involved in weather modification experiments.  Most of these activities took place in the 1960s and 1970s….  The research programs declined in the second half of the 1970s and ended in the early 1980s.

Currently, there is one hail suppression program operating in Alberta.  The activities are conducted by Weather Modifications Inc.  In an attempt to reduce damage caused by hail, the company seeds some developing thunderstorms in the Calgary-Red Deer area between May and September of each year since 1996.  It uses silver iodide as a seeding agent.  Weather Modifications Inc has been the only company undertaking weather modification activities in Canada during the past 15 years.

With respect to the use of silver iodide by Weather Modification Inc, the emissions produced by this compound are considered to have negligible environmental or health impacts.  Material safety data sheets for silver iodide are readily available online.  Measurements of silver iodide concentrations in regions where silver iodide-based weather modification activities have occurred have not found concentrations that were above the natural background concentrations.  For long-term, larger scale weather modification operations, EC endorses the position of the World Meteorological Organization that the implications on ecosystems need to be assessed.   For more details please consult www.wmo.int/pages/prog/arep/wwrp/new/documents/WM_statement_guidelines_approved.pdf

The Assistant Deputy Minister of Environment Canada’s Meteorological Service of Canada is the administrator of the Weather Modifications Information Act.  Under the Act, any weather modifications undertaken over Canada need to be formally reported to the Department.  Weather Modifications Inc provides the necessary reports to Environment Canada on a yearly basis.  Regarding your request for information on who has sprayed what, and where, I am attaching the records from 1996 to 2011 for your interest.

Please accept my best wishes.

Sincerely,

The Honourable Leona Agulukkaq, P.C, M.P
Minister of the Environment”

2 pictures below of the physical letter (click to enlarge):

IMG_20131027_153934.jpg

IMG_20131027_155727.jpg

The Assistant Deputy Minister of the Meteorological Service of Canada is David Grime.  David is the administrator of the Weather Modifications Information Act and according to the letter I received it indicates that David literally over sees and knows all weather modification programs that are happening in Canada.  David is also President of the United Nations World Meteorological Organization and President of World Meteorological Organization -WMO/OMM.  This guy is big.

The letter also made mention that geoengineering programs in Canada started in 1948 and most of the activities took place in the 60s and 70s and died out by 80s but it did not give any details as to what type of geoengineering activities occurred. So I am replying to the letter requesting more details as to what type of geoengineering experiments were conducted in those times, so please stayed tuned and visit this site in the future to see there is a reply from EC to my letter.

So the information about who oversees the geoengineering projects in Canada and the release of the dates of when it started is a news breaker for me and I was quiet satisfied with receiving it.  As to the information about cloud seeding and hail mitigation is information that is absolutely not new to me and I’ve written articles about Weather Modifications Inc and cloud seeding in the past.  Click HERE for a past article written in the summer.  Also by just going to Weather Modifications Inc website by clicking HERE it goes into details of all the geoengineering projects that are in operation.

Below are reports made by Weather Modifications Inc to EC pursuant to the WMI Act that I received from EC.  I have not gone through it all but I figure I get this information out:

If you notice above, in the last paragraph of reports there are 3 weeks missing.  Week 13-15 were not on the disc.  I wonder if there was something in those reports EC didn’t want to share with me on purpose or if it is because there were no operations happening those weeks?  I will also be asking them for more information about the missing weeks in my reply letter.

Conclusion

New questions arise after reading the letter that I received from Leona Agulukkaq, the Minister of Environment.

  1. What type of geoengineering experiments/programs were being conducted from 1940s – 1980s?
  2. Where are the reports for week 13-15 in 2011?
  3. And what about the year 2012?

They gave me no information about the persistent chemtrails that we see in our skies and I was surprised (but not that surprised) that they never supplied me with the declassified EC documents outlining geoengineering projects. I find it funny that there were mainstream reports of Canada doing geoengineering experiments in the ocean by adding iron to create more plankton growth, which they say ‘binds’ carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and yet in the letter Leona told me there hasn’t been any other geoengineering projects happening in Canada.  Click HERE for an article from CTV News.

In the summer of 2012, EC declassified documents that outlined proposed geoengineering projects which outlined carbon-dioxide removal (CDR) via dumping iron into ocean  and solar-radiation management (SRM) by reflecting solar radiation back into the atmosphere via sulfur injections along with other things.  Click HERE for that declassified document that was just mentioned.

Also in the same summer EC declassified another document that outlined geoengineering projects titled “Geoengineering: Science and Governance”.  Click HERE to view document.  If you go to page 10 it mentions the plankton growth and if you scroll to page 13 it makes mention of dispersing sulfur into the atmosphere via airplanes, rockets or balloons to reflect solar radiation.  Could some chemtrails we see in the sky contain sulfur?

So it looks like I will be sending a reply to EC outlining everything mentioned in Conclusion section so stay tuned for future reports.

By Dan Rather

The old expression about everything being bigger in Texas just got trumped by what’s happening in California. In my career as a reporter, I’ve been on more than a few drug raids and seen my fair share of marijuana plants. But nothing prepared me for what’s growing in northern California. As Mendocino Sheriff Tom Allman describes them, they’re “super-mega-steroid marijuana plants. We followed Sheriff Allman along on a raid near Ukiah where deputies had just discovered more than a hundred plants the size of giant Christmas trees, some reaching 15 feet high. It’s the latest trend in pot farms, or what are increasingly looking like pot plantations! So how’d they get so big? Sheriff Allman says it’s a combination of genetic modification, fertilizers, pesticides, California’s ideal growing climate and water, lots of water.

While the super plants we found in an illegal growing operation were in Mendocino County, they’re popping up all over the state, and much of the time on public land where illegal large-scale cultivation of marijuana is destroying local ecosystems. And, increasingly, it’s not locals who are farming the pot plants. Allman told me that Latin American, even European syndicates, have moved in to the back woods where they are growing far from prying eyes. This is a multi-billion dollar business and those who I spoke to used words like “crisis” and “out of control” to describe what’s going on here. Think about this — illegal marijuana farms in northern California are actually sucking the mighty Eel River dry, and that’s threatening the native salmon population.

While the diversion of water from rivers is a big concern, the use of toxic pesticides — some banned long ago in the U.S. — to keep anything and everything away from crops is also troubling. These pesticides are poisoning wildlife and contaminating the water supply. We also discovered that these chemicals show up in marijuana that’s not only headed for the black market, but in supplies due to be sold in California’s medical dispensaries.
